The following research has been conducted by Kenneth and Andrew Gardner, and is reprinted by permission. It also appears in a similar article on the Weston A. Price Foundation’s website.
It is a wise precaution not to apply substances to our skin that we would not eat.
We know that the skin is the largest organ of the body and readily absorbs much of what is applied to it, good and bad. That is why so many drugs can be administered through the use of transdermal patches. Therefore, it is an excellent principle and wise precaution not to apply substances to our skin that we would not readily take internally or, in a word, eat. It would be ideal if what we used on our skin were edible, and yet more, a whole food, in which case it would also have the potential of actually nourishing the skin and helping it to heal itself.
Concerns About Modern Skin Care Products
Modern, popular skin care lines contain a number of toxic ingredients including petrolatum, mineral oil, parabens, BHT, titanium dioxide, triethanolanmine [TEA], DMDM-hydantoin, methylisothaiazolinone, sodium hydroxide, polysorbate 80, polysorbate 80, Ceteareth-20, EDTA, phenoxyethanol, diazolidinyl urea, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol.
In his book Toxic Beauty, Samuel Epstein highlights the fact that many chemicals are found even in some popular “natural” brands found in health food stores. There is also undisclosed “fragrance”, almost certainly synthetic, and such fragrances have been documented to be carcinogenic and toxic in other ways, causing headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, coughing, vomiting, and skin irritation as well as nervous system and behavioral effects. There were also chemical preservatives such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. Sodium benzoate has many toxic effects on the body as outlined in its Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and when combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it forms benzene, a known carcinogen. Potassium sorbate is fundamentally non-toxic but can cause skin irritation per its MSDS. In any case, it seems that synthetic preservatives that inhibit the growth of micro-organisms would also generally not be beneficial to other living organisms such as humans.
As Sally Fallon Morell explains in the Oiling of America, “natural” products also contain certain vegetable oils that could be harmful: polyunsaturated oils like safflower, sunflower, cottonseed, corn, soy, and canola. High heat is generally used in the production of these oils. Polyunsaturated oils are unstable, fragile, and susceptible to rancidity when subjected to heat, which causes the production of free radicals, associated with cell damage, aging, and disease. Certainly, we do not want to be applying products high in free radicals to our skin, causing the very types of problems we are trying to relieve or prevent. And polyunsaturates would not seem to be conducive to skin health, extrapolating from the fact that the modern excess consumption of these types of oils leads to a host of health problems.
What did people use for skin care before the introduction of man-made chemicals?
Tallow, amongst other ingredients food in nature. See this photo of a traditional tallow balm and this historic illustration of tallow production as published on the Weston A. Price Foundation’s website. A book of recipes and information for all facets of life, written by Dr. A.W. Chase, MD in 1866, lists ten formulations of salve, eight of which contain tallow, in addition to other natural ingredients.
Currently, there are virtually no skin care products available that are made with animal fats. Interestingly, they disappeared at the same time that animal fats in our diets did. Among the animal fats used for skin care, it appeared that the one used most overwhelmingly was indeed tallow. Tallow is the rendered fat of cows, sheep, and other ruminant animals such as deer. It is very solid and waxy at room temperature and can be kept for extended periods without the need for refrigeration. Rendering is the process of gently heating the interior fat tissue, called “suet”, causing the pure oils to melt away from the rest of the tissue. Tallow was usually mixed with various other substances directly from nature to form a spreadable skin balm. Further research shows that modern science supports this traditional use of tallow as a principal ingredient of skin care recipes.
No plant-based skin care ingredient or product can remotely compare to tallow in its power to nourish and heal the skin.
From biology, we know that the cell membrane is made up primarily of fatty acids, a double layer, to be exact. Saturated fats constitute at least 50 percent of the cell membrane. As Sally Fallon Morell explains in her book Nourishing Traditions, since saturated fats tend to be more solid than unsaturated fats at a given temperature, they help give the cell membrane its necessary stiffness and integrity for proper function. The monounsaturated fats, while not as “solid” as the saturated fats, are more so than the polyunsaturated fats which are also present in the cell membrane in their own proper proportion, although the modern diet leads to a disproportionate amount of the polyunsaturates. Healthy, “toned” skin cells with sufficient saturated and monounsaturated fats would undoubtedly make for healthy, toned skin. Interestingly, tallow fat is typically 50 to 55 percent saturated, just like our cell membranes, with almost all of the rest being monounsaturated, so it makes sense that it would be helpful for skin health and compatible with our cell biology.
Another strong indication of tallow’s compatibility with our skin biology is its similarity to sebum, the oily, waxy matter that lubricates and waterproofs our skin. Indeed, the word “sebum” actually means “tallow” in Latin and began to be used in this biological sense around the year 1700. William D. James MD explains that the sebaceous glands, which secrete sebum, are found in greatest abundance on the face and scalp, but they are distributed over all of our skin except on the palms and soles. Cheung Russel’s research reveals that sebum is made up of lipids (fats) of which 41 percent are in the form of triglyderides, and the lipids of tallow are principally in the form of triglycerides, which is how fatty acids are usually configured in nature.
Tallow is compatible with our skin biology and is readily absorbed by the skin.
In regard to the compatibility of tallow with the biology of our skin, we should note that we are animals rather than plants, so the modern taboo against animal products in skin care products would seem unfounded and even illogical. In addition to containing very little saturated fats, plant products do not have the same levels of other nutrients needed for healthy skin. Tallow contains the abundant natural fat-soluble activators, vitamins A, D, and K, as well as vitamin E, which are found only in animal fats and which are all necessary for general health and for skin health.

Vintage Tradition
Beyond serving to moisturize and nourish our skin, Vintage Tradition’s tallow balm has proven to heal a variety of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap, baby acne, dry and chapped skin, rashes, and keratosis pilaris. See these testimonials. In addition, read this testimonial and view the photographs from Taryn, a mother who healed her child’s eczema with tallow. I found her experience to be very compelling.
I have made some at home and it didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped. It wasn’t as smooth and silky or absorbable as the Vintage Tradition’s product. I have tried all of their different body balms, including the mild manly scent, and there wasn’t one I didn’t enjoy! I am choosing to use and recommend Vintage Tradition’s products because of the quality of the nourishing ingredients, the fact that their tallow balm is highly absorbable, effective and due to the ease that comes with having the product ready made.
Quality Ingredients
There are no more than three of the highest quality ingredients available in Vintage Tradition’s tallow balm: 100% grass-fed tallow, extra virgin olive oil and high quality essential oils, for options that contain them.
- Tallow – Vintage Tradition obtains their tallow from Larga Vista Ranch, Maytag Mountain Ranch, Music Meadows Ranch, James Ranch, and Sun Prairie Beef, all in Colorado, Alderspring Ranch in Idaho, Touchstone Angus in Wyoming, and other ranches where the cows are 100% grass-fed, which is important for the superior therapeutic value of their balm.
- Olive Oil – They use olive oil supplied by Chaffin Family Orchards to the tallow to make it softer and more spreadable at room temperature. Pure tallow has a hard, waxy consistency; candles used to be made from tallow. They also add it because of its therapeutic qualities. Since ancient times, olive oil has been considered a healing salve for the skin due to its soothing, cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-cancer properties. We now know that these properties are, in part, a result of olive oil’s high levels of antioxidants, like vitamin E, carotenoids, and oleuropein.
- Essential Oil – The essential oils used in their products have a long-standing tradition of being healing to the skin, and they are expertly blended to promote optimal skin health. They also give their balms a fresh, pleasant scent. They only use Young Living Oils, considered amongst the most pure and therapeutic essential oils, produced to the highest standards in the industry. They are steam-distilled from plants grown at the highest standards and are not adulterated, extended, synthesized, or distilled using chemicals or high temperatures and pressure.

Great article! I’ve been using over the counter skin care but I’m not consistent with it. I don’t like the artificial scent and I feel like I’m trying to do something good for my skin with a toxic product. It’s been a pretty cold winter and running the heater has really dried out my skin. Also, I’m nursing so haven’t had much sleep which is aging me faster than ever. I’d really like to try tallow balm to see if it helps with hydration as well as restoring some of the vibrance I’ve lost. I just want something I can put on my skin consistently every day without worrying that I am contributing to the problem of unhealthy cells.
amazing . skin moisturizer
I use Bare Minerals for my skincare routine but it is still not as healthy as I would like it to be. I would love to try this product for myself and for my husband, who has started developing eczema around his nose and eyebrows. This is a great article, thank you so much!
I’ve heard and read that many drugstore products have ‘endocrine disruptors’ that can be toxic to our bodies and interfere with metabolism. I’d like to include a tallow based product in my routine to see if this can aid the healing of my metabolism. Thanks for the chance to win!
I use an over the counter product now and have tried to go natural without much success. I have “good” skin and would like to keep it. Tallow sounds very healthy and healing.
This is an interesting article. I don’t use many skin care lotions or oils since they usually contain ingredients I don’t really want to put on my body. Tallow balm, however, sounds like it would be something I would be willing to use. Sometimes when I am cooking with either olive oil or coconut oil, I will rub the excess off the spoon onto my skin and rub it in. My skin tends to be dry since I do so much cooking and thus hand washing, so using a tallow balm sounds like it would be a great addition to my health routine. It sounds like a good product.
I am using Coconut Oil and Fat Face Fat Stick for troubled areas along with essential oils as needed. I’ve been considering purchasing a tallow based lotion because my regime isn’t cutting it this winter. I’d love to receive a tallow balm to relieve my dry skin.
I would like to win the balm for my husband and daughter. He is currently just using lavendar oil and coconut oil lotion on his hands, He is outdoors everyday, and has dry chapped hands. My daughter has eczema inside her elbows and on her hands. I would like to stop her from using Hydrocortisone, but it seems to be the only thing that works.
Hi Carolyn,
There will be 3 days to continue to use the 10% discount after the qualified recipients are randomly chosen, in the case that yours isn’t amongst them. I recommend you consider this tallow balm as it is known to work very well for both the conditions you’ve mentioned!
Great article thank you! I currently use Miracle II soap for washing at night and coconut oil to remove makeup on my face but have really struggled with finding a natural moisturizer that works well in harsh, cold PA winters! I would love to try these products! Thank you for the giveaway !
I recently developed eczema at the age of 48. I am healing my insides with whole foods, collagen, raw milk. I have yet to find an external solution to combat my dry skin. I love to use products that I can esstiantially eat! I am eager to try tallow balm.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re also dealing with eczema :( I read this article last night and I wanted to share it with you in case you’re looking for more ideas to help heal/soothe it in conjunction with the healing diet. I tried the topical magnesium (just a tiny bit!) mixed with Shea butter & castor oil directly on the patch-it stung pretty intensely for awhile, rubbing it helped the stinging, also have heard that it’s good to exfoliate it, so perhaps it helped in that regard as well. Initially it was quite red and inflamed but this morning seems to look much better and feels significantly less rough. Also haven’t felt it itch at all today!
Anyways, I wish you a speedy healing process and hope that you find this article helpful

What a wonderful article! I’ve been hearing a bit about tallow for skin health lately. I’ve been using only raw organic coconut oil as soap and homemade lotions for skin and hair made from combinations of coconut oil, Shea butter, mango butter, jojoba oil and olive oil & essential oils for my skin for the last 2 years. I’ll typically use Dr. Bronners soaps a few times per week on skin and 1x per week on hair as shampoo. I’ve been struggling with a patch of eczema on my thigh that hasn’t ever fully healed, even on a more restrictive AIP/GAPS type diet. I’m hoping that tallow will help to get this eczema fully healed, looking forward to trying it out!
I currently use a variety of products though have had the most success with coconut oil. I have very dry skin but it is prone to breaking out so it is hard to find the right blend of products but when I do a steam wash with coconut oil it seems to do the least damage in stripping my skin of natural oils. I think tallow would be another contender that could do the same but I like the added richness and substance of it when compared to coconut oil. It also sounds like the “Pureness” is the same (if not higher) as the oil. I have hesitated in the past because I never knew the quality and sadly most I know stick up their nose when I have asked if they have tried it. Would love to be a pioneer ;)
Oh and would love “mostly unsented” if I won.
i currently use my homemade skin products. i have homemade lye soap, homemade hard lotion bars, homemade salt and sugar scrubs, homemade tooth “paste”. i do not use tallow in any of these products. i didn’t realize until reading this article how great tallow is for your skin. my husband has a patch of psoriasis/eczema on his shin we have been treating for years with sooooo many different products. i would love to make some with tallow for this purpose, and would LOVE to win some TALLOW BALM from you, too!
I use Green Pasture’s beauty balm, but would love to try this tallow balm.
My grandchildren, ages 3, 5, and 7 struggle with eczema. We have tried several different creams and oils in efforts to improve the condition of their skin. Nothing we have tried has proved truly effective. Sometimes an application of coconut oil combined with lavender essential oil will give momentary relief from the itching and burning. The evidence shared in this article about tallow balm give me hope that there is, indeed, a product that can not only give relief from the painful symptoms, but also prove to be healing to their sensitive skin. What a blessing that would be!
I am always on the search for new nontoxic skin care products. I have very dry skin and in winter my skin gets chapped, splits and even bleeds. I’ve tried pretty much everything I can get my hands on. Some with success, some with failure. I’m very interested in trying this beef tallow balm. Especially since beef tallow is one of my favorite fats to cook with!
I love Nourishing Tradition’s tallow balm! I have been using it for about two years now, and I can tell my skin looks and feels better after using it. Even better than with coconut oil. I’m almost out of it, and would love to win another one! Their ingredients seem very high quality.
Thanks for this information! I typically he tallow balm made by a friend of mine, coconut oil, or a cocoa butter balm on my skin, especially over the winter. My husband uses the tallow balm as deodorant as well. During the summer months I don’t seem to need it as much but we do if we get a little pink from too much sun exposure. I really enjoy any of these balms on my hands as they do absorb quite well and have little scent. I would love to try this brand and compare.
Never heard of tallow would love to give this a try. My little one has sensitive skin and I’ve tried everything. I can’t use typical moisturizers on my face I use a few oils but it doesn’t seem to be enough and being in my 30’s I’m desperate for a good moisturizer. This sounds amazing.
Great article! My children seem to have various skin issues and we’ve used tallow in the past. But since I ran out I’ve been using a non-petroleum jelly type product and it doesn’t work as well. The tallow definitely had a nourishing type quality and a little goes a long way. I’d love to try some more!
I have been really wanting to try a tallow balm on my 4month old daughter severe eczema. Right now I am using a salve I made using comfrey and calendula infused olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and lavender, cedar wood, roman chamomile, and helichrysum essential oils. Our doctor wants me to stop using it and use Cetaphil-yuck, no thank you!
Between a frigid winter, 4 kiddos 5 and under, nursing, and being a birth worker up all night….my skin takes a toll! I have just been using pure coconut oil but this article has been so interesting, it just makes so much sense to switch to tallow! I would love to try Vintage Traditions tallow product. Thank you so much for sharing, I love your posts. :)
I would love to try some of their tallow balm. I currently use home-rendered tallow with some olive oil and essential oils, but alas, I’m almost out. Plus, I’d like to compare their product with mine!
Currently I use use coconut oil lotion, but we live in a very dry and cold climate and would love something more moisturizing. I have never heard of using tallow for skin care and would live the opportunity to try it for myself, husband, and kids. We love to do as many traditional WAP things as we can! Thanks! :)
I’ve been using some coconut and calendula based balms to heal our family’s excema, allergic reactions, and really dry skin. We are generally interested in paleo products there days and I saw some tallow balm offered at a paleo restaurant gift shelf but I wasn’t sure I would like it. This seems the perfect opportunity to give it a go! We really need to find something with intense moisturizing properties. Thank you! 5 year old and two adults.
I would love to try this tallow balm on my three year old son’s eczema he’s had since he was three months old. My 11 month old has cradle cap also and have been using coconut oil on her, but this product sounds so good! I had never heard of using tallow before, but it makes sense because it is also so nourishing. The only thing I use on both of them is coconut oil for hydration and for body wash and shampoo, we use Weleda calendula wash.
How are the winners announced? Through email? Thank you!
Yes, Danielle. I email all those who respond and announce those whose qualifying answers were randomly chosen!
I currently use coconut oil mixed with some lavender oil for myself and my daughter. My sister made me a face scrub with essential oil as well and I absolutely love it. I’ve also done lotions, but have tried to stay away from these as I learn more! I’m always looking for natural ways to moisturize my skin! I’d love to try some tallow and see how it would work for me!
Currently, I am using a homemade salve made from beeswax, grape seed oil, essential oils, and vitamin-e oil. It’s alright, but my skin still seems thirsty with key dry spots. I’ve never tried tallow before and would love to become a “slave” to it! I also use the OCM for my face which seems to help, but still have some dry patches. I also only soap the “necessary” parts for the winter.
I had a baby a few weeks ago and don’t find much time for my skin. But what I do have currently in my drawer are some face oils (rose hip, evening primrose, vit c & e blend oil etc, which I was drawn to buying because of their natural appeal. However I haven’t noticed that they are improving my skin in any way, such as with the scaring, pigmentation and eye wrinkles. This is the first I’ve heard of tallow and would love to see if it gives my skin some ‘life’ back into it. I also have young children with eczema and dry skin and would be interested to see if tallow makes a difference.
I currently make my own lotions. My usual is coconut and olive oils with a few drops of lavender. It’s the only thing that doesn’t sting like crazy, but I have noticed the insufficiency to actually moisturize and heal. It’s very temporary relief. I’m excited to try tallow.
We currently use Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap for hand/bodywash. The kids get coconut oil in their bath which really seems to help keep their skin from drying out even more this time of year. I use jojoba oil on my face when I need it. We have one child who suffers from eczema and we make a natural healing salve to use on him. I’d love to try the tallow on him instead!
Grass-fed tallow balm Is the only product I use on my face! Absolutly recommend It to all!
Over past decades I have used coconut oil, almond oil, and olive oil on my skin, but never tallow! I would love to try tallow balm!!! I have not yet rendered tallow but have collected some from the top of cooked beef and noticed how deliciously slippery it is! Also, I have a grandson with very sensitive skin that I would love to share it with. And I could see gifting jars of tallow balm to get others started using it.
Currently we use coconut oil and young living oils for most of our family’s skin care needs. Living in northern Maine, and being outdoors a lot, we all have pretty dry skin sometimes! I would like to try tallow balm for my youngest. She is 3 months old, EBF, and she has terrible eczema and cradle cap. The CO and EOs help, but she still looks pretty patchy sometimes.
I currently use lotion bars I’ve made with cocoa butter, coconut oil and beeswax, and they generally work well. However, I’ve been very interested in tallow in skincare as my daughters and I struggle with very dry skin, that in the winter borders on eczema.
Fascinating! I’ve never thought about using tallow topically, but intuitively (as well as historically and scientifically) it just makes sense. I live at over a mile high altitude, and I’ve begun to really see it taking a toll on my skin. Where previously I’ve been pleased with the results of various organic, plant-based skin care products, I now feel like I just can’t find a product that truly nourishes my skin. Perhaps tallow balm is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I’m also interested in having an excellent product on hand for treating skin conditions for my one year-old son. Thanks for an eye-opening blog post, and for hosting this exciting give-away!
I have been trying to replace our family’s care products with natural alternatives. I have read about tallow and found it interesting, would love to win. My 5 year old daughter is diabetic, and her skin is so dry, particularly in the winter. I use coconut oil and avocado oil mainly, but it doesn’t help for very long!
This is so weird, I just started looking into tallow balm today! We currently use coconut oil and/or pure Shea butter but it does nothing for my daughters eczema on her knees. I would love to try the mildly unscented balm!
For makeup I buy all natural from either Whole Foods or natural section from regular food store. As for skincare, I made a homemade makeup remover, lipbalm, deodorant, body butter and toothpaste (from a friend). I don’t wear makeup much and so just a little coconut/oliveoil mixture on my face is enough after washing with water. I never tried tallow balm or tried to make it and so it would be amazing to win. I like the scent Sensible if I win. Thank you for the giveway!
I’m currently using Scratch Mommy skin cream and I love it. I love that there are few ingredients and I know what they are. My current cream works well but I have to reapply it often. I’ve been intrigued by tallow skin cream for a while and I’d love to win some to try. My hands are perpetually dry from all the cooking and food related washing I do. I hope this tallow balm will put a stop to that. Thanks for the chance!
I’ve been using Living Libations or raw honey or Pristine Beauty or Eminence. I’m interested in tallow but curious if it gives same results as other oils. I’m hopeful it’s different in that, as the info states, plant are different than animals and we are animals. Looks interesting. I look forward to investigating this more. Essential oils are nice, too.
I’ve been using only jojoba oil to cleanse my face and coconut oil to moisturizer and my skin has improved so much. I would love to try tallow to see if it heals some of blemishes and scars I have from adult acne.
I currently use nourishing traditions tallow balm on my son’s eczema and also as my nightly face cleanser. I need more so if I don’t get a free one I’ll be using the 10% link ;) thanks!!
I’ve actually been using Vintage Traditions for over a year now and I LOVE it! I am also an independent distributor for Young Living. I would love to be able to give one of these jars away to someone on my Young Living team!
Oh how I would love to receive this as a gift! What an opportunity. I bought a jar of it a while back and started using it on the backs of my arms where I have keratosis palaris. I had tried soooooo many different products–even diet changes!–and nothing did the job. Until I used this tallow! Oh my goodness my arms had never been healthier, looked better, felt smoother. It’s truly a miracle. I absolutely love this stuff. Would be so grateful to be chosen.
Great article. I’ve been researching tallow balm for the past few weeks. My 5 yr old son has had eczema for the past 3 years and now my 10 month old has had it for a few months. I’ve tried everything from Eucerin and Aquafor, to Vaseline, coconut oil and almond oil, trying to keep the moisture in their skin. Nothing works and I feel so bad having to put medications (prescription steroids) on it. I’m slowly realizing the importance of living green thankfully…for our children’s sake. I ordered a bit off grass-fed tallow and have applied it only a few times to all of our skin and can see and feel a great difference already. Would love to try your tallow balm!
I currently use some skin care products that are plant based but my skin is still super dry. My 16 month old son also suffers from dry skin and we would love to try some tallow balm! Unscented would be great!
I am currently using Evanhaley lotion for my face and home made tallow lotion for least of body. I am 32 weeks pregnant and having an extremely dry skin during this pregnancy. The only thing that has helped my dry skin is tallow balm I made. I am in love with this stuff, although my family thinks I am crazy for using tallow on my skin :). I would love to win a jar of tallow balm, thanks for a chance to win this wonderful product.
I get Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions and when I get out of the shower that is what I lather down in on wet skin. I LOVED your article and learned a lot!! I would love to win and try the tallow balm. I know my body could use the health benefits!!
I don’t currently use anything because my skin is so sensitive and reacts to everything. Tallow balm sounds promising and I would love to try it. I have spent a fortune on trying different products only to be disappointed. Fingers crossed!
I have used, in the past, the higher priced facial products. Then I started actually reading the ingredient lists & quit using them. I have never heard of using tallow as a skincare product, and my interest is definitely piqued! I have made a couple of different types of balms & salves over the last few years with varying amounts of success, but, have yet to find something I’m totally happy with. I would love to try your tallow balm!
I think tallow balm will be the answer to me and my husband skin problems..
By working too hard his hands are as rough as a sandpaper .we tried all sort of hand creams organic medicated or any drugstore but nothing helped.. So after reading this article i think tallow balm is the only answer and i would love to use it on my skin too which is super duper extra sensitive and dry coz of which i cant use any makeup and breastfeeding to my 3 year old daughter have made my skin more dehydrated and dull… I am using sukin products right now but they are not helping at all .
So i think TALLOW IS THE WAY TO GO for all our skin issues..and would definately love to try out your tallow balm
i use neem oil on my pimples and emu oil on my face. I think it is important to put healthy products on my face. Unfortunately I have combination skin. So no matter how much oil I put on my face or what type of oil my skin is still dry. I would love to try tallow balm. I am now 30 and am noticing some wrinkles and the dry skin is not helping. I would love to try a healthy face cream that might help soothe my skin.
I don’t usually use skin care products but my hands are so dry this winter that I have been using Burt’s Bees and Aveda lotion to help moisturize them. It’s not working well though and I’m starting to get eczema spots on my hand. I would love to try the tallow balm to see if it can help moisturize my skin in a way that other products can not.
I’ve been using Jason brand Vitamin E oil, and it’s good, but my skin is still dry. Tallow sounds awesome! I’d love to give it a whirl!
i have purchased tallow balm in the past and loved it! It works wonders for my baby girls sensitive skin in Michigans freezing winter. The first time I bought the small size to try and fell in love. The second time I went for it and bought the big jar. My oldest daughter rubbed some on her face right when we were getting ready to walk out the door and forgot to put the lid back on. I returned home to find that my little dog licked the ENTIRE jar clean! I would love to win another jar!
Right now I am using only coconut oil. But my skin, especially my lips, are still dry. There are very few choices of skin products that are truly nourishing. And I’d like to be as careful with my skin as I am with my diet. I’ve been on a traditional diet for over two years and found greater strength and satisfaction in my food than ever before.
I’ve been using Nourishing Traditions almost unscented for almost two years now. I love it. I would really like to win because I met a teacher at my son’s school who is having trouble with excema and dryness on her face. I’ve told her about Nourishing Traditions and she is interested, but a little hesitant about putting tallow balm on her face. I want to just order her some, but if I could win it that would be better for my budget. Hate to buy it and have her not use it and that would bug me… If I could win her some of the girly scent, that would be great. (And I love the deodorant balm! My son and I both use it. The products are great!)
Thanks for your testimonial Karibeth. The product is called Vintage Tradition. The book is Nourishing Traditions!
I am using shea butter and cocoa butter and coconut oil and essential oils on my skin, but I would love to try this tallow balm to heal my painful eczema on my hands and my daughters rough and dry skin on her arms and legs. We have tried everything and I believe this in combination with my high quality doterra oils will do the trick. Thank you so much for offering this, I’m so excited to try it. I pray we win. My hands have been killing me all pregnancy and now that my baby is in the NICU I have to wash my hands with horrible soap up there so I need this balm to undue the damage that the soap at the hospital is doing to my skin so I can have soft hands to caress my new precious baby. :-)
I currently wash my face with jojoba oil with castor oil mixed with it. I apply coconut oil around my eyes to moisturizer. I have very acne prone skin, so I have had to forego makeup, except for eyeshadow. All makeup I use is Everyday Minerals brand. For mascara I currently have lemongrass. I would love to have an all-over moisturizer to heal my acne pocked/prone skin.
I currently use Clinique products. I would love to try tallow. I have a daughter who suffers from dry skin. She often gets rashes and skin irritations. I would like to see what tallow could do for us.
I have been using vintage traditions scent almost unscented under my eyes and on the wrinkles between my eyes daily for a couple months now. I also use products from chagrin valley for cleansing and moisturizing. I love these products! My skin isn’t red and inflamed anymore :)
Very good article! I currently use raw African Shea butter & also coconut oil for my skin. I use tallow for cooking and love it. Would love to try tallow for my skin.
what a great and informative article. Currently I wash with Neutrogena Naturals face wash and use witch hazel as a toner and Aragon oil for moisturizer. I would love to try Tallow Bslm because I have very acne prone skin at 34. I would love to be completely natural in my skincare and have renewal an healing for. Thanks for all the info and this great giveaway
Thanks for sharing this information! i currently use a homemade skin cream of shea butter, beeswax, coconut oil, and raw honey. I love the idea of using tallow and would love to try it!
I would love to add tallow balm to our daily regimen! We currently use coconut oil and Nubian Heritage lotion for our moisturizers.
I currently use a homemade tallow balm. I use the same ingredients but sometimes will add some coconut, Argan, and/or, Tamanu oils. I love it and use it on my face, hands, and legs. I also used it on my belly when I was pregnant and believe it had a lot to do with preventing stretch marks. I would love to compare this to mine. Or maybe I would gift it to a friend.
My two year old son has strange patches of dry skin on his chest, belly and mouth. I’ve tried everything from coconut oil to shea butter to mass produced lotions like Honest Co. Nothing has truly worked and I would love to give tallow a try. I also think it would be beneficial to my husband who is a frequent hand washer and suffers from red, cracked hands all year long.
I would love to try out Tallow balm! I’ve heard great things about it, but haven’t taken the dive yet. My family uses coconut oil as our main lotion. Sometimes I melt and mix in cocoa butter and make a body butter. But I find that in winter, it doesn’t put up much of a defense against dry skin, especially pregnant dry skin!
Currently use Burts Bees but looking for help for my sons excema.
My 3rd baby has had eczema for a few months now…I would hate to use a steroid cream but the coconut shea balm I make isn’t helping at all. I’d also love to try this on my own face for rosacea. I am using an expensive organic cream that is unfortunately not effective. Thank you for this opportunity!
I use Trader Joe’s unscented facial lotion right now because my DIY lotion is a bit hard to apply to the face. I would love to try tallow balm since what I make is all vegetable based right now (other than beeswax). My current recipe has almond oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, a little beeswax and vitamin e oil. It helped heal a few dry spots on my elbow and waist but it did take a long time. I would imagine that tallow would be a lot faster!
We just use coconut oil, would love to try this because we haven’t yet!
I am using eminence product which I love and would love to try tallow balm.
We use coconut oil for all over body lotion. I use tallow balm on hands to heal and condition our hard working hands. We are dairy farmers, crane operators, and have a large family garden. Our hands are always getting a work out! Tallow balm is the only thing that keeps our hands from cracking.
i love making my own skincare products from real ingredients- all the better if i can use them on my kiddos with complete confidence in their purity. one of my kiddos has really challenging skin issues; eczema since antibiotics at 9mo. we eat a purely wapf diet, exercise and get plenty of sunshine, but i haven’t found the secret to kicking it yet. as she’s grown it’s manifested as deep cystic acne on her face, slow wound healing and exceptionally dry skin. i haven’t “bitten the bullet” yet to make my own tallow, but would love to try it on her incredibly sensitive skin.
also, as a foster family we often receive children who have been so mis-nourished by fast food and few fresh vegetables their skin is not only dry, but thick as well. i believe this cream would benefit them immensely!
thank you for offering this giveaway to our community, i hope you get a tremendous boost in your sales and growth in your business!
I’ve been pondering using tallow balm for over a year when I first heard about its luxuriousness. We use shea butter and coconut oil right now. A few of my family including me gets eczema. I used to get it all the time but since making lifestyle and diet changes its rare. My skin is also dry from thyroid issues. Would love to try this tallow for me and my babies little red cheeks! Thanks!
I don’t use anything on my skin regularly, since I’ve learned of all the bad things in most over-the-counter skin care products. I use coconut oil when I am desperate for relief of a skin ailment, but it leaves a greasy residue on my skin that I don’t like. I have access to suet from which I could make tallow and then use the tallow to make tallow balm. However, after reading Sandrine’s comments about her own results making tallow balm, I’m convinced I would rather try tallow balm from someone who has perfected the process so the tallow balm is more absorbable. The dry, cracking skin on the back of my hands would surely benefit from Vintage Tradition’s Tallow Balm.
Great article about tallow. I would love to win a container of vintage traditions tallow balm. Currently I am using coconut oil on my legs. I have also tried Apple Valley body butter for my hands (Apple Valley is a family business out of Minnesota).
I’ve always been interested in tallow, and think it might really help. I’m a recovering vegetarian (been vegetarian my whole life, started eating fish and a little chicken), and I’ve always had mild to moderate acne on my face and back (which is embarrassing). Consuming more fat has helped my dry skin enormously, and so I think it would really make a difference if I could put it on my skin. If I don’t win, I’ll definitely buy the tallow balm anyway!
Currently we are using coconut and avocado oil for skin care. We would love to try tallow and experience it’s amazing benefits especially for the children.
Excited to move along my skincare journey with some “new” and better products. I might be going through a bit of a mid-life crisis within myself. I would like to take some steps back in regard to our natural human bodies and well-being. I’ve slowly been throwing out all of my chemical-filled skin creams and am trying to replace them with one, two, and three ingredient products I can actually read. I would love a chance at winning some of your tallow balm. Vintage Traditions is paving the way for great changes. Knowledge is Power!
My sister is raving about tallow. She’d love to have her own animals some day and will probably render tallow herself. My upcoming wedding is in May. I have had issues with acne for years. I wonder if tallow balm would help clear my skin up a bit. For a chance to win some tallow balm, thank you!
Thanks for the chance to win some of your tallow balm. I would love to try some on my dry, cracked, bleeding knuckles. I get a bit self conscious about them during class when I’m teaching my students. My wife thinks this balm would help heal them. This Wisconsin winter weather doesn’t help much! Thank you!
I hope to win tallow balm to help with my daughters eczema and my self deprived eye bags. It is amazing stuff and we love the comfort of knowing that what we are using to treat skin problems is not only effective at healing, but nourishing as well! Thank you for the wonderful article and the chance to win some tallow balm!
I currently use arnica oil mixed with pacifica brand face lotion. Sometimes i use a homemade beesewax lotion. I would love to be selected for a sample of your tallow balm. I’m sure it would cure my tissue scratched nose. Thank you!
I currently use coconut oil. I have used many different lotions over the years but never tallow. I would love to use it for myself and my kids. My little girl gets dry skin pretty quickly as soon as the weather sets cold and dry, I would love to see if this can prevent it. Would also love more detailed information as to how to make tallow when we butcher our cattle. Thanks!
I’ve been using homemade tallow balm on my baby’s eczema and dry skin for about a month. It feels amazing but doesn’t always seem to help, depending on what state his skin is in: dry, weeping, itchy, etc. Because of this, I juggle products including Aquaphor even though I know full well how horrible it is! It makes me so sad but sometimes it seems to be the item that doesn’t make him uncomfortable. I would love to try vintage traditions tallow balm to see if it helps more than my homemade stuff. I know tallow is amazing and want to be a believer who experiences the same amazing results I keep reading about!
Great article and I’m so interested in this. I have extreme dry skin and after being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and Hasimotos I have been clearing out my cabinet and replacing it with natural products to reduce the toxic load in my body. I’ve been wanting to try Tallow balm as I’ve heard amazing things about the wonderful moisture it provides and seems so nourishing and I LOVE the wholesome ingredients. I have been using in the past: Aveeno, Cetaphil and Cosmedix and I’m not looking to continue upgrading these. Thanks so much!
I currently use Tropical Traditions lotions for my body. I also use Young Living essential oils with coconut oil on my face. I use homemade soap too. It’s my makeup that’s naughty. Makeup Forever brand and CoverGirl. Oh the shame! I would love to try tallow balm because it looks so rich, creamy, and nourishing! Maybe I’d need less makeup then. :)
I currently use either coconut oil or a homemade (less than great!) tallow balm. I would love to try this so I know what Tallow Balm should be like! :) I have very dry skin and even dandruff that I really think using a quality product like this could help. Thanks for the great article- I have a few loved ones I think would really benefit from reading this, so I am looking forward to sharing it!
As a breastfeeding mother I am very picky about what I put on and on my body. I agree if you won’t eat it then don’t apply it to your skin. I’m not saying it will taste good LOL but it will still be absorbed into the bloodstream. There are so many environmental exposure that have become unavoidable so a strong effort is required to avoid toxicity. We do eat tallow and I have heard for years of the benefits to applying it to my skin. I guess I feel the tallow in home is better used nourishing my 12 month old. It would be nice to have a special jar for mommy too!
I am using regular store lotion. I never knew it was bad until recently. I would love to use natural products and in turn teach my family.
I use Oly of Olay products for day and night. As I am getting older (50 this year), I’m finding that my skin is getting dryer easier and I’m looking for something that is gentle enough for my sensitive skin, won’t aggravate my rosacea, and leaves my skin feeling moisturized. While I like coconut oil, I can’t use it on my face and sometimes it actually feels too light on my body after a shower.
I currently use plain coconut oil, straight from the jar. I wash my face with plain warm water. I feel like it doesn’t moisturizer very deeply, and am willing to try tallow. Tallow seems like it would be too heavy for the face, and I live in a humid environment. This is a great opportunity to try it out, thanks!
I use a small amount and it doesn’t feel too heavy on my face however, we are all unique and have different experiences!
I would love to try this tallow oil! It’s been a long, cold winter, I’m itchy! I use only natural products: straight almond oil. And, from the farmstand, I use their blend of sunflower oil, beeswax and water. And, I use Badger Sleep Balm(olive oil, castor oil, beeswax, essential oils). Or, I use 100% cocoa butter for chapstick, which is very aromatic and yummy. I also use a Vitamin E roller (Golden Way, Louisville, KY). Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
I am a fifty-something, breast cancer and conventional cancer treatment survivor, with dry skin. I have been using only coconut oil on my skin as I have been wanting to stay away from all the hazadous chemicals in most body and skin care products. But your article and the information on tallow makes me want to try using tallow now! Thank you for all your efforts to educate and empower people to make healthier choices!
Thanks for posting this! I have been slowly natural-izing all of my body care over the past few years as I continue to battle a severe case of eczema. I mainly use a homeopathic ointment (unda 270) and a lotion that I make from beeswax and oil, but I am in love with the idea of using tallow!
I would love love love to try this product to see if it will help my eczema … I know eczema is ultimately an internal issue and I have been working on healing the gut, removing allergens, and detoxifying for YEARS, but no relief yet. In the mean time, I need something to help soothe my skin! I am absolutely desperate for relief, and I think tallow would be a great moisturizer to help repair the moisture barrier of my skin! Thanks so much for considering me!!
I use almond meal as a scrub/cleanser for my face and moisturizer with coconut oil and essential oils. This winter my face has been particularly dry and I would love to try tallow balm. I try to only use skin products I would eat.
Great post! My family uses a lot of coconut oil for brushing our teeth to using it as a moisturizer. I have made my own calendula salve and we have also used it for just about everything, especially this very cold winter. My daughter’s skin condition does very well with natural based moisturizers. I have looked for tallow locally and no one seems to have any available. I would love the chance to try tallow and see if my family love sit as much as I think they will!
I’d love to receive tallow balm because my 2 year old has been struggling with really dry, patchy skin this winter. I’m starting to wonder if it’s actually eczema. I make my own lotion bars and also use a raw shea butter. I use all natural products and avoid commercially made skin care, unless it’s made with ingredients I could use and make at home such as coconut oil, olive oil, etc. I would love to get my hands on some tallow! Making my own isn’t one of the things I’ve been motivated to tackle in my tiny kitchen with a 2 year old while pregnant.
Right now I use a homemade mix of emu oil and rosehip seed oil and I rotate essential oils. I only want something on my skin that I can pronounce the ingredients of and comes directly from nature! I love using tallow and lards in my cooking, so a tallow balm sounds delightful for the areas that need that special attention. I’d also like to try it on my children, who typically need acute skin care more than I do since they are outside and exploring the world so much.
I use some commercial products as well as coconut oil for cleansing and moisturizing. I have mild rosacea and would like to see how this helps!
My 5 month old has severe eczema. We have tried coconut oil, cod liver oil, probiotics, borage oil, emu oil, cocoa butter, aquafor, head and shoulders (per pediatrician suggestion). Nothing has worked. Maybe tallow will.
Right now I really am not using a skin product to wash my face. I use moisturizers from time to time but my skin feels dryer and dryer the older I get. I just turned forty and figure it is about time I started taking care if my skin better. Tallow butter might just be what I need!
I love the idea of using animal fats to nourish the outside like we have been using them to nourish our insides. It just makes sense to use just one more part of an animal who sacrifices it’s life for us. I believe it to be honoring to use the whole animal-allowing it to truly and thoroughly feed us. I currently use some of the Shea Moisture products and love the scent, but I would be interested in trying this tallow lotion!
I use blends of different carrier oils and essential oils. I also make Whipped Body Butters, Lotion Bars, balm and salves from recipes online. I haven’t tried anything with tallow yet. I’ve tried Organic lotions from Dr Bronner’s and Trooical Traditions. I’d love to win and try a tallow based moisturizer. The Windswept one sounds great!
I have been using Miessence skincare for many years. It feels so very clean and nourishing. I have tried to find similar products but keep coming back to them. The best soap I’ve ever tried was made with beef tallow. I look forward to trying your Tallow Balm as it supports my own ideas of health and wellness.
I am currently using Weleda and Epicuren products. I am always looking for natural skin products that work well and that are safe for me and my family!
Currently, I am using lard from pastured pigs mixed with helichrysum and chamomile oils on my face. For my hands, I am using Badger Balm unscented for sensitive skin. I would love to receive tallow balm because I was given Vintage Traditions for Christmas a year ago and loved it! I would most likely use it for my daughter’s eczema, rather than myself.
I would love to try the tallow balm because I have never tried skin balms made from animal fats. As for my current skin care, I am dabbling in making my own. I have seriously struggled with hormonal acne since the birth of my first child six years ago. After trying SO many different options, dietary and topical, I have finally found a mixture of ingredients that healed the deep, red and painful rashlike acne on my face. However, it’s all plant-based, and I would like to see what effect tallow has on my hormonal acne (I have to apply something regularly or it begins to come back).
I search high and low to find skincare products that do not contain alcohol in some shape or form. I have even tried making my own, however, the consistency is not exactly what I would like although it is better than most store bought creams or lotions. I do purchase rendered fat from local farmers to use in my cooking, however, have never tried a skincare product containing tallow nor would I have thought to put tallow on my skin yet it makes perfect sense! I would be very interested to give Kenneth and Andrew Gardner’s tallow products a try and would be happy to report back the results and share them on my wapfkingston.org blog. Thank you.
While reading online articles about nutrition according to Westin A. Price and the benefits of raw milk (which I am also new to), I came across this article. Very interesting and timely for me. I have recently begun using coconut oil both in cooking and as a body moisturizer. I currently use Arbonne natural facial care after years of cheap drugstore products, and am NOW experiencing stubborn breakouts. (??) I would like to try something even more natural, and am hopeful tallow balm may be just what I need to address an itchy, dry-patchy skin issue I am having. I am also curious the effect it would have on my teen daughter’s acne?
Karen, you should look into drinking some organic apple cider vinegar for both you and your daughter. It nourishes and heals the skin from the inside out, as well as a multitude of other benefits. I started my friend’s teenage son on it because he was having awful breakouts- being a teenager and playing football don’t make the best mix for smooth faces. His acne cleared up very quickly!
I’m currently using argan oil moisturizer, pure shea butter and/or coconut oil on my body..as well as honey as a daily cleanser. I’ve never used tallow before, so it would be quite exciting.
I would LOVE to try tallow balm. Our water is terrible and my hands get so dry. I’ve yet to find anything natural that really sinks in and soothes as well as my Gold Bond. It seems everything natural or conventional that I’ve tried either don’t last long enough or just glide onto but not INTO my skin. I would love to find some real healthful relief! Thank you!
I use Benedetta skincare line. My skin has improved dramatically – no more eczema. My skin is still dry though. Tallow cream sounds very promising as a way to nourish my dry aging skin. I would like to protect my 4 year old daughter’s skin with tallow cream.
I’d love to try this tallow balm! I’m currently using Bare Minerals. I have found I’m very chemically sensitive. I develop migraines & get a metallic taste in my mouth with most skin products, including makeup & sunscreens. My 4 year old daughter seems to have the same reaction, only has not been exposed enough to get migraines, thankfully. That didn’t develop in my until my 20’s so I’m hoping I can stop whatever toxic build-up must be in my system. It has gotten where I do not like trying new products, for the debilitating after-effects are so bad. I want to try “sensible” scent for us & hope this is one I can keep using & ordering!
I’m very attracted to the tallow balm due to the short ingredient list, and I don’t need a degree in biochem to understand them. I’m using coconut oil on myself and family. I’d like a natural product for them for dryness and acne. Almost unscented sounds appealing as a choice of scent.
I currently use lard from my local farm or coconut oil from Green Pastures for moisterizer. I use raw honey, avacado, and banana for a cleansing mask on my face. I would like to start using vintage traditions on my face, because the coconut oil and lard is irritating when it gets in my eyes. My almost 2 year-old just started having eczema 2 weeks ago. I just read an article from WAPF on FB that beef tallow is the best thing for eczema.
I started using a tallow soap made by a local vendor for the shower and absolutely love it. I make my own face wash with Castile soap, vitamin E, and essential oils. I have been using aloe Vera gel on my face as a moisturizer and CJs butter lotion on my body. I am currently out of just about all of my products so am looking to incorporate some new products to my routine.
I am currently moisturizing my face with coconut oil and my body with my homemade lotion bars (made with coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter). I would love a tallow balm because I’ve heard so many good things about it and I know that’s what was used before the “better living through chemistry” (not the movie from last year) and “saturated fats are bad for you” lies erupted. Plus, Vintage Tradition’s blend sounds just plain amazing.
Thank you for this opportunity!
Wendi
Informative article, thank you for sharing. Right now, I am using avocado oil as a base and Devita Evening Rich Moisturizerizer on top of that for my morning and night routine. While my face is smooth, the skin by my mouth is dry and flaky which I attribute to keratosis pilaris. I have switched my products to cleaner, less toxic products but I am always looking for purer products. This is the first time I’ve heard of tallow and it makes so much sense to use an animal fat based product to replenish our skin. I really want to try this product because if it works to nourish and repair my skin and I don’t have to use toxic products I’m sold. Thank you!
Very good information, really enjoyed this article. It’s really amazing when you look at any magazine, there are so many advertisements on so many body care products. Most products are chemical based, so many have allergic reactions and don’t know why when the answer is so basic, “if you can’t eat it, why put it on your skin/hair etc”. I currently use coconut oil for my hair and skin as a moisturizer with good results. Would love to try the “Tallow Balm” product and use the 10% discount. Thank you again for sharing this inflation.
I first heard about using tallow from mommypotamus. I finally gave in when my 6 month old started gettin eczema. It has done wonders for her skin. Ive even used it on diaper rash. I would love to try it on me, but for now the sacred balm is reserved for baby. I’d love to see more information on how much EO you suggest putting in the homemade versions. Not your secret recipes, but a general rule on how much. Thanks!
I currently alternate between using olive oil, coconut oil, and Honest Company lotion on myself. I use the olive and coconut oils on my 9-month-old. We both have eczema. I know the value of healing from the inside out and I am working to heal my gut. However, tallow balm would be a great compliment to the healing process for both of us.
I currently use olive oil or coconut oil as a moisturizer. I make deodorant with coconut oil, corn starch and baking soda. I wash my body with ivory soap and hair with Dr. Bronners. We use Tom’s of Maine toothpaste. My husband has severe eczema, especially on his hands. I’ve been wanting for him to try tallow on it.
I use over the counter face products and would like to switch to something more natural. Also, my daughter who is 8, suffers from mild eczema and I think it is food related. I would love to try Tallow for both of us :-).
I’ve used olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter. I’ve used cod liver oil balm and tallow based soap, but not tallow cream or tallow balm, probably because I’ve never come across it. Every now and then, I get eczema on my elbows. It sounds like tallow balm would do wonders for my skin.
I currently use a wonderful all natural product made by a herbalist friend of mine. It is edible and wonderful but I am always on the look out for new and alternative products. And I am a big fan of wonderful tallow and lard. I will only use products that contain natural ingredients (I have to understand what they all are) and scented with essential oils. I am fortunate not to have any strong allergic issues to fragrances but since I have eliminated them from my house and body, they hit as way too strong any time I encounter them elsewhere. I would love to try the Tallow balm because I believe it is essential to feed our skin as we do ourselves!
I actually use vintage tradition tallow balm now as a facial moisturizer and we use it on my son who has eczema. It’s been a wonderful product for both of us.
I love vintage traditions. We live in the middle east with the military right now and it is so good for our skin that gets a lot of sun exposure out here. I haven’t tried some of their new scents and would love to.
I have very fair skin and try different creams to help or I think will help. I use coconut oil around my eyes and on my neck; helps with dryness but I still feel my skin looks old. Always trying new eye cream that do not seem to do anything. I have not tried tallow; so why not?
I use coconut oil or lotion from the dollar store…tallow balm sounds like something I need to try since I am 65 and starting to get thin skin. Thanks
I use coconut oil for everything and origins brand (for face). I would like to try more products that have natural ingredients. I also have a skin balm that has olive oil infused with herbs but i think i like the coconut oil better, based on what i have available to use. I would love to try tallow though.
I feel that I found this article for a purpose today. Last week, I found myself itching my skin in my sleep, with the itch being unbearable at times. After some research online, I’ve concluded that I seem to have eczema. It’s no wonder with as dry as it’s been this winter and especially in our house. My anniversary 31 year wedding anniversary is March 7th and I would love the opportunity to try the tallow bar and find some relief from this itching!
I am currently using a tea tree based cleanser from trader joes, followed by green pastures beauty balm. id love to try tallow balm, since I do render some for cooking, along with lard, and it makes my hands so nice and soft while chopping it up :)
Just ordered some tallow balm as I can see the chances of winning may be rather slim! I have had problems with hot flashes in menopause. I truly believe that it is something I am putting on my skin. For the most part, I live the Nourishing Traditions diet (not perfectly), so am so happy that you are sharing this information with all of us!!
I tend to make my own skin care products. Right now I’m really into Hydroponic Acid and Essential oils. Id LOVE to give tallow a try.I already cook with tallow, It only makes sense that tallow would be an amazing addition to any skin care regime.
Since dealing with many health issues in my family I have simplified our skin care to using coconut oil and ghee. My daughter is still dealing with eczema on the back of her arms and my hands are often very dry. I would love to try the tallow balm to see how it would compare to what we are already using! Thank you for sharing another healthy option with us!
I have super duper sensitive skin and have tried dozens of different things to treat all the redness, flakes, rashes, etc. over the years. I would love to try out tallow balm to see how it could help my current skin issues. Thanks for this great article. Please pick ME to win!!!
Lately I have been using Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion as a way to moisturize and supplement with Magnesium. However, my daughter’s skin is too sensitive to that lotion so I apply some cocoa butter mixed with coconut oil, but not often enough bc the mixture is too hard with the cold temperatures this time of year. One time I purchased the tallow balm and we really like it but use it sparingly because it is a little more costly than say just plain coconut oil. But it is true that a little goes a long way. My dad has really dry skin and doesn’t like coconut oil so I let him borrow my tallow balm and he likes it so much he hasn’t given it back. So it would be really awesome to win a tallow balm!
I have been using tallow as skin care since May 2014 and am very pleased with the results. I was ordering from Vintage Traditions but found products much cheaper on Etsy. I would love to receive a container of Vintage Traditions balm though. Their quality is unsurpassed.
Thank you for the strong testimonial!
I learn something new (albeit an “old tradition”) from you almost daily! Currently the only skin care routine I have is application of coconut oil, which I use on everything. My hands tend to crack and bleed a lot during the winter. Honestly most days this full-time mom doesn’t look in the mirror! Perhaps a new product would give me a push to pay more attention to my skin. Even if I’m not chosen as a winner I will definitely check out tallow balm in the near future. Thank you in advance!
Catherine, if you aren’t randomly chosen, you’ll have 3 more days after I chose the recipients to enjoy the 10% discount we’ve been offered!
I’ve been using the dove for sensitive skin moisturizers for a while. However, since becoming pregnant my doctor suggested I switch to something more natural. I’ve been looking for something like tallow balm for a while and am hopeful that it will improve my skin. This article came at the perfect time!
Thank you for the wonderful article! I currently use either sweet almond oil or coconut oil for my body and organic rose hip seed oil foru face and don’t find that it keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day without reapplication. I ditched over-the-counter products a few years ago once I realized that I was rubbing chemicals directly into a very large organ. Not ideal. I have made tallow by rendering the far from Grassfed cows but didn’t like the smell or feel of it. I would love to try this brand of tallow balm now that I’ve seen your glowing review of Vintage Tradition’s tallow balm. I am also hopeful that it could help soothe my two year old’s eczema flares as we eliminate what is causing them.
I have been making more and more of my skincare products. I still haven’t made body lotion, though I have bought some ingredients for it. I have used tallow to make a nighttime skin cream that I mix with red palm oil for the abundance of vitamin E variants in that. It turns my skin a little yellow, but it soaks in by morning. :) I love the way tallow balm makes my skin feel really silky. I’d love to try Vintage Traditions tallow balm because it’s the first brand I’ve seen for purchase that contains tallow and only safe ingredients. I wonder how they deal with the meaty smell of it, though? I only use essential oils to mask the scent, which works okay.
I have not experienced any of the scents as meaty. I have every single one! Even the completely unscented doesn’t smell meaty to me. Likely because of the olive oil. To my nose, the scents are lovely. I enjoy them so much!
Wow, great article. I had no idea. I use a deodorant stone and coconut oil to moisturize. I also use an Argon oil shampoo. I’d love to give this balm a try and would like to try making it. I made a lotion bar from bees wax, honey and cocoa butter. Thanks.
Great article! I currently just use coconut oil as a moisturizer (full body/hair). I like it but I am definitely up for trying something new. I love tallow (for cooking) I just never considered using it as a beauty product!! Makes total sense though, I wish I had looked into it before. I bet this would work wonderfully for stretch marks, I’m going to have to give it a try.
For a lotion I use an organic lotion that’s locally made from someone at my Farmers Market. I have KP (chicken skin as I like to call it) so I’m always researching something that will help my KP skin. I’ve read that Tallow can really help with that, so I’m excited to see if it works and to just see in general what my skin feels like after using it!
Right now, I am using Nerium AD to try. As an esthetician, I am always interested in trying new products. I normally use Egyptian Magic, which I loooove! I am pretty sure I will love this tallow balm even more from the reviews. I would love to try this and then be able to suggest to my clients. I would not be able to purchase right now, because unfortunately my husband is on a nation wide strike with the oil industry! :( Thank you for this opportunity!
I find it really amazing and mind-blowing that skin can be healed with tallow balm! For the past 4 years I had been using mineral powders from a company I learned about in Mexico and they work fine but they are not moisturizing. More recently I’ve been using paleo remedies (essential oils) but I haven’t seen excellent results. I have a lot of sun spots and old acne scars and would love to see if tallow balm could help my skin. I also have an extremely dry and callused foot (strangely enough, the other one is normal) and would also love to see if tallow balm could be the solution to make it soft and ‘normal’.
Sandrine… I learn something new from you every time! Love it. Excited to learn more. I did buy some organic beef tallow from our cow share and now I have some direction to start learning what to do with it! I have gone to all food-worthy products since I have adrenal problems. It’s been quite a stretch. The only thing I have a hard time with is deodorant. Haven’t found a replacement that I love yet. I have to admit that I am a recovering “product whore”.. I used to be obsessed with the latest and the best. Well, come to find out, the best was killing me. It was staggering the amount of product I threw out that was so bad for my health. My daughter is being raised where it’s the norm to slather on the oils and such that we eat. BUT tallow is a new one for me! Thank you for sharing!!
I use a natural goat milk and honey lotion for myself and am wanting to try tallow balm something more natural and in a non liquid form for my disabled son’s psorasis he is experiencing. .Hard to find the right skin product to clear up these stubborn dry patches of skin on the back and sides of his neck I want to use only a pure totally chemical free natural skin product .I would love the opportunity to try this for my disabled son hoping this will make the dry patches clear up .
I oil cleanse with coconut oil and use a moisturizer or sunblock by Keys Soap that is composed mainly of avocado oil, carrotseed oil etc. I have dry patches but experience better skin when I cut out processed foods, dairy, sugar, and wheat. I would like to try out tallow to see how it works on some of the problem areas and I’d like to prevent as well as treat.
I am currently trying to transition to more natural products. I have been experimenting with Beauty Balm by Green Pastures. Still unsure about fishy smells! In any case, tallow and animal-based skincare just seems to make good sense to me.
stick with it. I love the beauty balm it has done wonders for my skin. I use it at night. It took some time to see a difference. You will get use to the smell. Trust me.
We have used so many skincare products for me and my son due to our eczema. Right now, I have a homemade balm made with raw shea butter, Green Pasture infused coconut oil, and various essential oil. I have tried homemade tallow before for a bit, but never stuck to it. I’d like to try Vintage Tradition’s tallow balm. Our son has come a long way to heal his skin from inside out (we are on the GAPS diet). But lately he is having a flare-up. It’s always hard to see him so itchy and scratchy all the time. I just want him to get a break and be a boy.
I use Burt’s bees, but I have always been fascinated by the fact that we have abandoned so many old traditions that worked for centuries a d have allowed ourselves to be seduced by modern science that hasn’t had the years of testing that the old ways did.
What a wonderful post. This is the first I am reading about Tallow and I am so interested in trying it. When my son was born 9 years ago, I took an infant massage class and the instructor told the parents not to place anything on the baby’s skin that we would not eat. I began thinking about the products I used on my skin and if those products were safe. I threw lots of things away. Currently, I use lots of coconut oil on my skin. I found it to be wonderful for the winter months. I also use organic food for face masks. I am going to give Tallow a try. Love learning new things.
I read about tallow a few years ago and was intrigued with the common sense of the article. I often struggle with dry skin. I use coconut oil as a moisturizer and for soothing after shaving. I have quit using sunscreen because of what is in most of them. I am concerned with overall health and want to try the tallow as a healthy skin care product.
I use a skincare line that is all natural made from a local lady in my town. I stopped using toxic ingredients years ago. I also use a cod liver oil balm on my face. I suffer from acne and hyper pigmentation and I think the tallow would be a perfect balance for my regimen. Thank you for the article. Love it.
Love tallow balm! Would love to try this one. I currently use straight olive oil, coconut oil and a tallow balm for my eczema that a friend made me.
I currently use Osmosis which I thin is one of the best clinical skincare lines. I’m interested in trying to go more natural and would love to try tallow!
I currently use coconut oil mostly. I’ve tried making my own lotion blends but the consistency never seems to turn out quite right. I live in the High Desert of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and can’t seem to keep my skin moisturized. I would be so grateful to try this ultra-nourshing, made with love product! Thanks for what you do.
I have been using LBRI’s skincare line for the last 10 years. It’s an aloe based line that doesn’t have all the toxins in other commonly available lines. As a strong believer in WAPF principles I’m always excited to try things that are consistent with WAPF. I remember reading an article in a Wise Traditions article about tallow in skincare products but had never seen them available…. tallow balm seems to be based on the information in that article and I look forward to trying it.
My 18 month old son has been struggling with eczema since he was two months old. I’ve tried almost every natural method of skin care I’ve come across, such as lavender EO, shea butter, coconut oil, organic salves, and more. I eventually gave in to occasionally using steroid creams/oils just to give his skin a break from the inflammation and constant scratching over his entire body. I hate seeing him suffer with this condition and feeling like nothing seems to be working despite my hardest attempts. I would love to try tallow balm on my son to see if it would help heal his skin so he can live an itch-free life for once.
Skin care products that I use at various times include: goat milk soap, jojoba oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, Dr. Bronner’s products… I have, however, had some recent flare ups with acne and I am trying to figure out what to do. I have also been struggling with terribly dry skin this winter. I have heard great things about tallow balm. I would love to try it and see how it could feed/positively impact (perhaps even help heal!) my skin. Thank you for providing this opportunity!
I currently use a variety of skin care products. I have used Bare minerals. I also use WEN skin care. I have some Perlier skin lotions and creams, mostly the Imperial Honey. I also use Lacome moisturizers on my face and eyes. I am now really interested in going organic as much as possible.
I love this article. I have a variety of skin care products. I use Bare Minerals for face wash. For a moisturizer doe my eyes and face, I use Lancôme. For body, I use Perlier, mostly the Honey Meil but I do have other scents. And just recently started using WEN body cream. I am slowly starting to go organic in my eating habits and interested in taking it a step further in my skin care. Using the tallow balm would be the first step in that direction.
I’m using avocado oil right now but I just can’t find the right oil or lotion to help my crazy dry skin. Some things like coconut oil actually make it drier so it’s quite a mystery! I would LOVE to try the unscented tallow! :-)
I am using Yes To Carrots moisturizer, but have been wanting to go completely holistic and try Vintage Traditions tallow ever since reading about it! Coconut oil has been too oily for me, and I haven’t found the right product yet!
I currently use Vintage Traditions tallow balm on my face from time to time, but RELY on it for my son’s eczema outbreaks. I love it and am almost out so it would be great to win. I don’t follow a very regimented skin care routine other than warm water and jojoba oil at night to wash alternating with a homemade baking soda/oil scrub to exfoliate and a clay wash from Primal Life Organics. Then I use a PLO face moisturizer or one from a great organic/ herbal/ gf company called nahla Organics. I use nahla body wash and body oils also.
I have a minimalist skin care regime – mostly b/c I don’t trust the products out there!
I use an essential oil-fragranced organic body lotion made by lavanila currently for my body – but nothing for my face for moisturization, but would like to!
I usually tone with Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar and apply coconut oil as needed at night, and use a bentonite clay powder as a mask.
I have been experimenting with YL oils and different carrier oils, as well as Dr. Bronner’s liquid castille soap , and shea butter, and have made my own body wash, foaming hamdsoap, and body butter.
I love tallow! I have made my own tallow balm a few times, and even passed it along to friends. It works so well for so many things! I would love to try the one from Vintage Tradition to compare the quality of theirs vs homemade. My current skin care consists of apricot oil and essential oils, and a coffee honey scrub.
I currently use a diy face scrub with essential oils and deep steep lotion as I love the smell. The lotion says all natural ingredients but this sounds like a better option. I recently learned of tallow balm from a friend that makes her own. I am quite interested in trying this myself as it sounds very beneficial. Your article just gave me the extra push to pursue this for sure!
I currently use homemade whipped body butters, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and infused coconut and grapeseed oils. I believe in using ingredients that are safe for eating, and as natural as I can get within reason. I believe tallow is a great moisturizer and skin healer, and think it’s awesome that there is a company like Vintage Traditions that makes such great products with minimal, simple, yet healing ingredients.
My quest for wholeness began with my introduction to Weston Price traditions during pregnancy. Since then I have rethought and reprogrammed everything I ever learned about health, from the inside-out! Three years later, I feel good about where I am “inside” but working more on the “out”. Tallow balm sounds like a brilliant next step in the journey of self and family care. Currently I use a variety of thoughtfully made organic products.
We all have sensitive skin and I would be very grateful to try this product with my little girl. Thanks for considering.
Tallow is staple in our household. We not only use it for cooking, but also in homemade body lotion. As someone who makes all “beauty” products and such at home, I think it would be so interesting to compare Vintage Tradition’s body tallow- I would love to feel the consistency of theirs. As much as I enjoy making products at home it’s always nice to know there are great companies like Vintage Traditions to fall back on! Thank you for another super blog post.
I am very concerned about the carcinogens and endocrine disruptors in body care products and also in food. As a result, I use very few body care products at all. I use Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap, and I very ocassionally use a face cream. The one currently in medicine cabinet is MyChelle Pumpkin Renew Cream.
I would love to receive a sample of the tallow cream because I recently began to develop excema. I would love to try the tallow cream to see if it would help.
I would like to try the tallow balm to see if it would clear up my one year old grandson’s eczema.
I have severe atopic dermatitis on my hands, blisters that break, extreme itching, skin breakes bleeds, dry. I only use coconut oil on my hands and have been advised by my doctor to take some supplements. So far nothing has helped and I have been suffering like this for almost a year now. taking care of daily chores and my kids has been challenging with my hands. AFter reading this article I am hopeful that tallow would possibly help heal my hands. I would love to win some tallow balm.
My 7 month old son has a bad case of eczema. I just heard about tallow balm and was looking into trying it with him. Your post is so timely!
I’ve been using only coconut oil on my skin. It doesn’t seem to help with dryness much at all. I thought it might be because of my age, 57 but now I can see that tallow balm would be much more compatible and effective as a moisturizer. The essential oils sounds wonderful. I can barely survive any other “fragrances.”
I am currently using the oil cleansing method, but drug store cosmetics for my face. I have read so many positive comments regarding tallow use on the face. I would love to be able to eliminate make up!
We currently use coconut oil, on our skin. My 2 year old has some eczema issues, and we have been having a hard time controlling it this winter. Tallow balm is something that I have been wanting to try for myself, and possible on my little one for his eczema. My husband also has psoriasis, and we have tried a few different things that have not helped him. I try hard not to expose my kiddos to chemicals, its hard to find products that are safe.
I currently do not use anything on my skin, except occasional coconut oil and a beeswax based moisturizer. I am entering for my 4 year old niece who has excema. Her mother has tried EVERY lotion under the sun and all are not helping. I would love to give this to her if I win :)
Wonderful article!
Since our son was born almost 2 years ago, we’ve been changing our eating, cosmetic, and cleaning habits to natural plant- or animal-based options.
We use organic plant-based shampoo/conditioner, soap, and hair spray from a small company in Canada; I make our own plant-based deordorants; we use an organic plant-based baby oil for my son (and myself). Most of these use olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, and herbal extracts. We also use Young Living Essential Oils to boost up the therapeutic effects of our products, if need be.
I recently started the GAPS therapeutic diet and am realizing more and more the benefit of quality grassfed animal fats/products. I’ve heard of using tallow balm before, but haven’t been able to find a quality source of it so far. With my son having recently had a rash (from roseola) and currently having another viral- or eczema-type rash that’s not going away, I think it would be a wise time to try tallow balm!
Thank you for what you do and what you support. And thank you to the company who is being so generous.
So cool! I’ve never heard of tallow until just recently since I’ve started my “real food journey” and have become a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation. I’ve tried incorporating lots of healthy fats into my diet (raw milk, raw butter, healthy cooking oils) and it’s made a huge difference in my skin. I’ve known about the dangers of using chemical products on my skin and in my hair, makeup, etc. for a while now so I’ve been slowly but surely swapping the chemicals for more natural products. My current skin care regime is washing with Dr. Bronner’s almond scented soap. (LOVE). I moisturize with coconut oil afterwards. I also use coconut oil for lotion. I’ve had to use olive oil a few times and that’s worked just fine as well. My complexion is better than it’s ever been and I rarely get acne. However, if I don’t put coconut oil on my face everyday it does sometimes get dry patches. I would love to try out the tallow balm and see how it compares to coconut oil when it comes to hydrating my dry skin. Very informative article. Keep spreading the truth about good fats!
Peace, love, & face grease! :D
I am currently using Shikai Borage Therapy Lotion, as well as extra virgin coconut oil. I also use raw, local honey mixed with water for my dermatitis (supposed to do it every other day but uh…well…doesn’t always happen that often!). Other than that, I have Tropical Traditions unscented moisturizing cream that I use once in awhile. I mainly use the Borage Therapy lotion though. I’d like to try the Tallow Balm because I have severe psoriasis and could really use some relief! My skin reacts negatively to most products so it’s hard finding something that will really help, while also preventing my skin from getting too dry and cracking. Right now my psoriasis is the worst it’s ever been and I think the Tallow Balm may be able to help. :)
I am a faithful consumer of Morrocco Method – a hair care product line free of chemicals ever since November 2014. Coconut oil has been my overall go to health substance ever since 2012 – hair, skin, teeth (oil pulling) and cooking. I do not use any store bought lotion or shampoo.I have come across this article regarding Tallow and would love to also include it in my routine not only for me but for the baby I babysit who suffers from real bad diaper rashes and still has cradle cap, so I do hope I am a lucky winner. I plan to use Earthpaste and to no longer use a store bought face wash to be completely chemical free and 100% natural.
Thanks for the great article! I’ve been using raw organic coconut oil as body “lotion” for a few years now. It does an ok job of relieving dry skin and at least I feel it’s a safe option for me. But now I’m REALLY intrigued by tallow balm! I use lamb tallow for cooking but it hadn’t crossed my mind that I could use animal fat on my body. Now, after reading the article, it makes perfect sense! I use Morrocco Method shampoos and magnesium oil as deodorant. For showering I use pure olive oil soap just on pits and crotch and cleanse my face using a mixture of oils. I recently developed my first ever skin rash (not as a result of using coconut oil, I’m sure) and reading about the baby’s eczema being cleared up with tallow balm has me interested in giving it a try! Thanks again. -Cynthia
I have stopped using all traditional lotions and shampoos, I use castile soap for my shampoo, coconut oil and essential oils for body and face, and for really dry chapped hands beeswax lotion bars, I would love to try the pretty girlie tallow balm.
I have never heard of tallow balm before reading your article! It sounds so wonderful. My 9 year old son has recently developed some bumps on the inside of his elbows and back of knees. Our neighbor who is a pediatrician said it just looks like a skin rash but nothing we have tried has worked to get rid of it. We eat pretty healthy and have tried avoiding different foods. However, the bumps are still there. The tallow butter seems like a fantastic thing to try. I love natural products and learning about new things. Thank you for this information:)
I would love to try your tallow. My granddaughter has severe allergies and eczema. She is allergic to soy, peanuts, tree nuts, seeds like sunflower seeds. With all these allergies, it is very hard to find something that I can use on her skim. Usually there is soy or sunflower oils.or tree nuts there is always something she’s allergic to in all of the products. She suffers horribly with eczema so scents are bad for her too. By the sounds of this product with only two ingredients if you want it unscented, that this just might be a live saver for her. She is 4 yrs old and has been suffering since she was 2 months old. Please consider her when you choose, thank you hee very concerned grandmother!
I would like to try these for my daughter. Shr is six months old. Her eczema is quite severe. We have found a plant based cream that has been working, but it has questionable ingredients. I have been looking into making my own tallow balm, but I don’t think I could handle the smell. Thank you for this opportunity.
I use MineralFusion body lotion andGriffin Remedy body lotion (over the counter) for my face and coconut oil for the rest of my skin. I find that coconut oil irritates my eyes if it gets in it that is why I do not use it on my face. My hands are always dry. I work with infants and new families and am mindful of hand washing. I am hopeful that the tallow would be helpful for my hands and maybe my face. Thanks so much for providing this opportunity.
I am always excited to try something natural and nourishing for my skin. I currently use Tropical Traditions body lotion on my face/body. I have been happy with this product, but have been interested in using tallow for awhile. I am most interested in trying this on my face, but my current lotion is not cutting it for my hands. I think tallow would be a great option for moisturizing my hands as well. Thank you for the giveaway!
I just started using more natural products. I have acne prone skin and the over the counter creams don’t work well with my skin. They leave my skin feeling greasy, or the acne creams leave my face too dry. I’m trying coconut oil, I add some lavender essential oils to it too some times. I make a face mask with bentonite clay a couple of times per week. After find about tallow in this post I’m interested in trying it. It seems to be more effective than coconut oil. I wanted to use products that are part of tradition, I really don;t believe in all this new products, at the end they create more problems than what they solve.
I have such sensitive skin being fair and freckled, and I react to a lot of different substances. I have to be careful what I use. I just started using Weleda and I use Burts Bees, both sensitive skin versions. They work ok. I really want to try tallow balm since it is natural and I’ve heard good things. I need moisture on my body. Also, I am working hard to rid the toxins in my life, and tallow balm would get me closer to that goal!
I use straight shea butter for lotion on myself and my 7m baby. Baby has very dry skin and some eczema that we have been treating with probiotics, enzymes, and removing dairy from my diet. All of that has helped immensely, but he still occasionally gets some spots. I had read about the benefits of tallow and made some a long time ago. I tried to make a fresh batch for our baby, but it didn’t turn out… I would love to try Vintage Tradition’s tallow on our baby and help his skin be more comfortable to be in! And I sure wouldn’t mind trying some myself too!
I am a mother of 3 babies, ages 4 years, 2 years and 4 months. My 2 and 4 year olds battled eczema during the winter months of the first year of their lives. I was able to manage it by using Babyganics Eczema Cream, which helped clear it up and maintain it within a few days. My poor 4 month old’s eczema is so bad and nothing we have tried has worked! We wash with Mustella brand cleanser for sensitive skin, and I have applied coconut oil, olive oil, and Babyganics eczema cream on her skin with no improvement at all. Her cheeks are constantly raw, chapped, and bleed daily from her eczema, it’s horrible. I’m trying to avoid a steroid cream and would be over the moon to win this giveaway! I really think this could help my daughter and would be so grateful to have the opportunity to give this a try. Thank you!
I use hyperoxy ozonated olive oil and coconut oil for any kind of skin problems. Would love to try the tallow balm.
I would so love to try this tallow balm. My 17 month old son has had eczema since he was 3 months old, and we’re starting him (and by nursing proxy, me) on GAPS at the end of the month. While I’m thankful for some hope with GAPS, his eczema is flaring big time right now, all over his stomach, back, legs, and feet. We tried rendering our own tallow about a year ago, but it ended up being so hard that it was difficult to work with. This tallow lotion would be amazing to try and hopefully attempt to replicate!
Hi I really need this product to balance my skin!! I’m a chef and I use a Mix I make myself but tallow would be perfect! I don’t wear makeup to work as its really hot but I want this product. Even if I don’t win, please send me info. Thanks! Amy Jahnke
I would love to win this tallow balm. I made the switch to all ‘natural’ skincare products about 5 years ago. I recently started learning that even these aren’t safe, as you say in your article. I’m scrutinizing labels more carefully and trying to switch to truly natural products. I’ve been using straight almond oil for a moisturizer lately, but it’s just not cutting it for my hands.
I currently use coconut oil (which tends to be too greasy to apy everywhere) or honest company lotion. This is the first I have heard of using tallow for skin care and I am very intrigued and would love to try it!
I am currently using over the counter products. I have tried several different products from the health stores and have not been satisfied with the results.About 9 years ago I had a skin cancer spot on my face….that is when I first became concerned about what chemicals my skin was absorbing. I have recently started being more vocal about my shift to doing things the “old” way. I would love to try this product and see if it would help reduce my skin dryness.
Please ignore my previous comment, as I hit Post before proofreading.

Recently I began trying to use all natural products and am experimenting with what works well for me using coconut oil, Dr. Bonner’s mild castille, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils primarily. I am not familiar with tallow but would love to try it and see how it works!
I have always wondered about tallow, tallow balm and it’s uses. I have had a stubborn patch of either excema or hives on my neck for quite awhile. I have used many home remedies for it including coconut oil. Nothing has helped with the itch or the unsightly appearance. I refuse to apply topical steroids which would be what would be prescribed by a dermatologist. I would LOVE IT if the ancient tallow balm would be the cure I have been searching for all this time!
Hi, i have used commercial skincare products by cosmetic companies until i started switching over 2 years ago to natural commercial products, and now i use just organic coconut oil to clean & moisturize my face. I love trying natural products, especially traditional ones, and have eliminated chemical detergents, cleaners & other personal care products from my home. As a stay at home mother of 2 young children, my hands look 10 years older than the rest of me from all the cleaning, dishwashing, frequent hand washing, & past diaper changing. I also have a cousin with eczema, which nothing has helped. He has tried everything, including diet & probiotics, but with no improvement. I am hoping that this cream will help him. I would like the almost unscented. Very excited yo try your product!
We live in nyc and have been having a very cold winter which leads to heat in the home which leads to dry dry skin. My 2 year old daughter had been having awfully dry skin. I have been using coconut oil which had helped some but not entirely. I am super interested in this product and look forward to trying it out. My daughter loves the idea of lotion so we would have fun trying it out. Plus it’s my birthday today so it would be fun to receive a free tallow product. If not than I will purchase one soon. Thank you!!
I really do not use anything and if I feel I need to I use coconut oil. But I feel like this would be great for me and my 5 kids. It would be also great when I get my mystery rash or my gluten rash. Would love to try it. Thanks 😘
I’ve been making my own lotion with coconut oil and never thought about tallow. I would love too yet Ancient Tallow products.
We are currently using Ava Anderson Non Toxic skin care products. They have a cream that is really thick that is supposed to help. However, this winter has been so drying that I’m looking for something else. I work in a bank with my hands all day long, so I need something to keep them from cracking. I’ve read about Tallow Balm before and just never gotten the nerve to try it. I guess I’m worried I’ll smell like animal fat all day long. BUt if there’s a scented one, real scents not fake fragrance, then I’d want to try it to see if it helps the cracks on my hands and my husband’s hands. Thank you for this article!
I have had eczema for most of my life. I am now learning about healing the gut and also about skin care products that are helpful for the eczema. I would love to try the tallow bomb and see if it helps my very dry skin. I have been using very strong steroid ointment for years also, and hope that the tallow might be a better solution. I would love the chance to win a Vintage Traditions tallow balm!
Very interesting article, my daughter has excema, so we have gone through most of the natural salves and creams, from neem oil to Vaseline. I know this is also an internal issue as well, and we are working on that, this is something I’ve never thought about and I do want to try this product.
Thanks for this article. We’ll definitely have to try tallow balm. I started making my own skin care products many years ago. We’ve stepped it up recently because my now 5 year old daughter has severe eczema that went off the charts about a year ago leaving the backs of her legs completely raw and bloody. Even now I usually have to stay in her room and rub her legs until she goes to sleep. At its worst I would be up with her every few hours all night long. We currently use a body butter of mostly Sheabutter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and EO’s. Through the help of an environmental dr, diet and our body butter we’ve made a significant improvement. I would love to try tallow balm on her! We’re significantly improved but still have a way to go.
I have a number of over-the-counter moisturizers that just sit there because I am concerned about the chemicals. But then I feel guilty because I spent money on them. So mostly I use nothing or coconut oil or one of these over-the-counter products.
Wind swept!
I use 100% pure and body deli.
Being an Esthetician and skin product junkie, my curiosity is peaked! I currently use products from the Body Deli, which are made from raw organic ingredients, and I do like them. Along with others, I have used coconut oil, hemp, apricot, and several other oils which I find only truly soak in best in the evening. I myself have very oily skin, so using an oil can be tricky but beneficial. I’m surprised I have not heard of using Tallow before stumbling upon this article. I am very curious to see how this product would fare in my household, as I have three uses to test it out on. My oily skin, my husband’s “winters” feet (it’s most terrible cracking you’ve ever seen), and my toddlers occasional eczema patches. Now on to read more on tallow!
Thank you for this post! I have heard/read about tallow before, and would love to try it. I currently only use coconut oil and a rosehip oil serum on my skin. I’m struggling with acne (I’m almost 30), and scarring from it. I’m hopeful that tallow could help heal some of my problems. I’d also love to share with a friend struggling with psoriasis. Thanks!
I am currently using dr haushka products for my face and Cody oil with lavendar on my body. My skin still feels dry. My hands especially always feel dry and I am cooking and gardening a lot and lots of hand washing means dry hands! I often get cracks in my hands which get quite painful. I really want to try tallow balm to try and heal those painful cracks and see if I can get silky smooth legs for a change! Thank you for considering me in your give away! And thanks for making a product with so much integrity!
I became sensitized to coconut several years ago and all of the soaps and lotions (even all natural brands or just using coconut oil directly) that I was currently using started causing eczema, a first for me. I tried various oils for a moisturizer (olive, jojoba, sunflower) with minimal success until I finally tried just my basic, grass fed butter. It coated and sunk in like a thick lotion and I was happy with the results. I began using butter, but started to see how inconvenient it was since it needed to be stored in the fridge (I live in HOT Texas). That’s when I started experimenting with solid animal fats like lard and the fat cap from my beef bone broth. These worked, but I was not wild about the smell or consistency. Then I tried the tallow balm recipe from the WAPF website and finally found a winner. I’ve tweaked that recipe over time and that’s what I use to moisturize everything. I’d LOVE to try the Vintage Traditions tallow balm as I’d love to have a pre-made product that smells better, has a better consistency and convenience.
I am very interested in trying tallow for my skin care. I was in a rather traumatic car accident, and suffered major facial injuries. I noticed right away that any skin care that I tried to use caused major inflammation and rash. I currently wash with goat milk soap and moisturize with emu oil and that is all I use on my skin. I think the tallow could be a breakthrough for me!
I try to use the most natural products that balances with convenience, but that comes with products with some questional ingredients even though they say they are natural. I use Aveda, Origin, and Magic Egypt on my skin. But I want to return to tallow. Iove tallow balm so much that I tried to make my own but failed. I would love one from you so that I can start up with tallow again. It was awesome against eczema when my 2 year old was a baby.
I’ve never heard of tallow until I read this very informative article! Thank you! I’ve been using expensive Arbonne products for years with a serem and lotion but this has not cured my ultra dry skin on the top of my hands! Help me please! I would love to try tallow and share it with those I know! Although financially strained, I don’t want this to stop me from having the best productions for me and my family and have chosen to make sacrifices to do so!
We currently use Aquaphor for our skin, but would love to use tallow balm instead for itchy and irrated skin! My son also develops eczema on his legs, so this would be helpful!
We use Dr Bronners baby soap to wash and a homemade lotion consisting of shea butter, cocoa butter, beeswax, coconut oil and melrose essential oil. We have made great strides in changing our diet to heal our daughters kp bumps and sons eczema, we have just recently been reading about tallow and would love to try it to address those issues.
I have genetically dry skin, unfortunately. I have used a myriad of unhealthy, paraben-laced, toxic moisturizers in my lifetime until I became more educated of the ingredients. Since my ‘awakening’, I have relied on coconut oil or a Shea butter bar (mixed with a few other natural oils) to keep my skin as healthy as possible. Both have been helpful, but I wonder if my skin will EVER have a soft, moist, and supple feeling to it? I am excited to try Vintage Traditions’ tallow balm on my skin as well as on my child suffering with eczema! Thank you for the opportunity of this giveaway :-)
My daughter is 3months old and has developed eczema all over her body. I’ve tried many different lotions but nothing’s worked except hydrocortisone which I hate using on my sweet girl. I would love try tallow and hope to find her some relief from all of the itching!!
Would love to try tallow for skin care. My allergies are getting worse and I’m very reactive to a lot of beauty products. Plus my daughter has eczema and I would love to use lotions that are more natural like tallow cream. We use vanacream, cerave cream, and non petroleum jelly. We have but allergies so can’t use a lot of creams and lotions from nut oils.
I use a variety of different products now, trying to find something that will work for my super dry skin and my 2 daughters’ eczema flare ups. We’ve tried coconut oil, various lotions and creams, shea butter, cortisone ointment and cream (bleh) and who knows what else…all with varying degrees of success. I’ve recently started looking into making my own concoction at home with various oils, butters and essential oils. During my searching, I came across some stuff about the benefits of tallow and would love to try it! So winning this giveaway would be a great way to try it out without potentially wasting more money as I have with so many other things lol. And I hadn’t heard of the help with cradle cap…I’ve exhausted myself with things to try for that!
I started looking at tallow about a month ago when nothing seemed to be working on my skin. I’ve tried emu oil, argan oil, rose hip seed oil, essential oils and nothing seems to be working. I don’t know where to purchase or how to make and right now being 8 wks pregnant and sicker than ever I doubt I would even attempt to make it!! Hoping I could get the chance to try it before purchasing!!
I currently use tallow balm as my facial moisturizer. I make my myself. Everyone thinks I’m at least 10 years younger than my actual age. I would love to win some tallow balm to see how mine stacks up.
Currently my family uses various combinations of raw shea butter, almond oil, and coconut oil. I would like to try tallow to see how it compares to what we currently use for moisturizing and healing various skin ailments. I have never heard of it before, and I am intrigued.
I’m currently using a regimen of Shea Moisture brand facial cleanser and moisturizer. Occasionally I use their facial mask as well. My skin is really sensitive and sometimes burns even just using hotel water to wash my face. I have 3 mixed race daughters, all with differing types of skin and needs. I typically use coconut oil on them, but I’d love to try the tallow to see how it works for each of us. I’ve read great things about it but have never tried it out. Thanks for considering us!
I don’t currently use any “official” products. My skin is very sensitive, and I just don’t trust most products out there! I wash my face daily with a Norwex body cloth and water only. For moisture I generally use coconut oil, and I will sometimes add a couple drops of a Young Living essential oil such as lavender. I would love to use tallow balm for extra moisture, and for healing when my skin is irritated.
I use coconut oil, jojojoba oil, and rose-hip seed oil. I definitely believe in living as closely as we can to the way our ancestors did and they definitely used tallow. I was raw vegan for a while and realized I needed some meat in my diet, so I think tallow on my skin sounds great!
I am answering on behalf of a Good friend. He is 28 and has been dealing with psoriasis for several years. I not sure the specific brands he has used but I know he has tried many kinds or topical treatments offered at conventional stores without much success. This sounds like a wonderful option for him, and would love to win it for him. He leads an active lifestyle kayaking as often as he can, which leads to his hands cracking and occasionally bleeding. This may be an answer he’s been looking for. Thanks for the great read and opportunity to win!
I currently use coconut oil and tallow-love both!
I use coconut oil often. I also use Annmarie Gianni’s line. I like the scents of her products and like that she uses all natural, botanical ingredients. I’ve been reading a lot about tallow balm in the last year or so. One of our local, pasturing farmers has recently started offering suet. I plan to get some with my next order. Would love to try some professionally-made tallow balm!
I am currently using babyganic eczema care for my hands. unfortunetly my son is starting to get a red rash that looks like eczema on his cheeks. I am thinking he may have inherited it from me. i would like to start an elimination diet but he is such a picky eater and bread and cheese seem to be his ONLY staples. I would love to try the tallow balm on his cheeks while we are trying to wean off gluten and dairy.
My daughter made me a natural skin conditioner that includes coconut oil and cocoa butter and I love it. However, I have a weird skin condition on my right arm and even though her conditioner helps it, it has not totally relieved it. I have tried everything and I am curious if this would help. Thank you for the chance.
I’ve struggled with dry skin and skin issues in general since moving to Montana’s arid climate. I used to use chemical-laden creams and lotions before learning better via Nourishing Traditions and WAP practices. Anymore I just use coconut oil, but with mixed results. I would SOOOOOO love to try some Vintage Tradition Tallow Balm in Windswept scent. Regardless, I’m going to recommend this to my good friend who suffers from awful psoriasis. Thank you for planting the bug in my ear, Sandrine, et al.!
I use no makeup whatsoever. I normally use Dr. Bronner’s soap when I shower. For facial cleansing, I use products from Mountain Rose Herbs. I use tallow balm I found on Etsy as a facial moisturizer. I would like to try yours because I am rather disappointed with the tallow balm I have. It is not moisturizing enough for anything except my face, which tends to be rather oily in places. For the rest of my skin, it was fairly useless. Maybe I got an inferior quality product. I am not sure. Maybe I am not getting the results I hoped for because the balm I have is not as high quality as Vintage Tradition Tallow Balm.
Right now I have been using essential oils along with a carrier oil for my face. I would love to add the addition of tallow balm with them. I’ve tried many different skin care regimens in the past due to acne prone skin. Just recently started using the oils. I think the tallow would be a great addition!
My daughter and I both have extremely sensitive skin, so any irritant becomes a rash, which then becomes eczema. We usually use cetaphil cream to moisturize and hydrocortisone for eczema flare ups. But it doesn’t work very well, and I would LOVE to try a natural product like tallow balm! I would much rather spend my money on something natural instead, if I knew it would work.
i use pure aloe Vera and those oil as a moisturizer and cleanse with blue corn and almond bits. I would be grateful to receive one of these tins for my Dad, who struggles with many skin conditions. Thank you for the opportunity.
*rose not those
well, I guess I can say I’m continuing to learn and wanting to perfect my education concerning what goes in and on my body and I attempt to bring others along with me in this process. I use Aveda products primarily and use coconut oil on occasion. This is mostly a marketing and convenience issue. I get Aveda at discount and it smells good but I can’t tell a marked difference in my skin. I fall back to coconut oil but since I still think of it as a kitchen product I don’t make the effort to use it as I could. I have rendered my own tallow but it smells beefy so I wouldn’t use it as it currently stands, which I why I’d love to try your product.
NYR Organic make up is the only one that doesn’t irritate me. Their standards far exceed any other market skin care product in terms of organic, non-GMO, eco-friendly soil practices, and glass bottles. So worth selling! That being said, I’m extremely interested in trying this tallow product. Thank you for sharing!
Great article! I’ve been so curious about tallow and skin care. My skin is my barometer for health — it’s very sensitive to what I put on it, in my body, as well as my emotions. My 8-year old son is the same way. I do use and love essential oils; however, I haven’t found the right base yet for my combination / sensitive skin. I’d love to try one of these tallow blends! The ‘almost unscented’ sounds the most beneficial and appealing to me. I’m also a Massage Therapist and people talk about their skin ALL the time! I’d love to find a product that I really love, so that I can recommend it to them. Thank you for the opportunity for this giveaway!
We need to spread the word about the health benefits of tallow and the benefits of nurturing our bodies with real foods on the inside and out. I am a nurse practitioner and am trying to teach as many patients as I can about the importance and benefits of natural health and wellness. I was given a small jar of homemade tallow balm as a gift a long time ago. I loved it! I have always wanted to make more, but just don’t have the time. I am currently using jojoba oil and Tropical Traditions cream. Unfortunately, I still have to resort to Eucerin and topical corticosteroids when my eczema flares up and would love to find an alternative. I would also love to find a natural skin product that I could confidently encourage my patients to use. I think your tallow balm is just the thing and would love to give it a try!
I do not presently use any skin care products. Due to a recent bout with eczema and dark circles under my eyes I have been researching different products and am very excited to have come across this article. As a man from a very blue collar background skin care was something that I was never taught was important or, in fact, even necessary. Thanks to my wife I am being exposed to new ideas that differ greatly from my experience and upbringing. One new set of ideas are the concepts espoused by the Dr. Weston A. Price Foundation. Those principles have really resonated with and worked for me. I’m super excited to try the tallow balm since I appreciate not only the animal based nature of the product but the complete lack of chemicals. The combination addresses all of my concerns for skin care.
Thank you so much for this information! We have four home raised littles and so many foster littles who all have different skin problems. One has many sensitivities, eczema and will get hives with so many lotions. I try olive oil, coconut oil and lavender oils for all of us, but it doesn’t always do the trick. My husband gets rashes on his legs this time of year that itch him like crazy that nothing seems to help with. I bought a 2oz bottle, I can’t wait to try it out, it would be so great to find something that helps all of us with our different needs that was so natural! Thank you for the chance at the giveaway and the discount as well!
Tallow Balm sounds amazing! As a psoriasis sufferer for more than 35 years (diagnosed in 4th grade-subjected to saran wrap and sock treatments and UV lights all through elementary school-gym class was hard), I have tried many lotions, ointments, and steroid creams. I currently use jo-joba oil and sunlight as my main treatments. It would be wonderful to be able to try this revolutionary tallow balm, as my itching could be alleviated and sleep would be easier. No matter what, I will be sharing this site with my psoriatic support group in the morning! Thanks!
I would love to try tallow balm! I suffer from a number of infuriating and humiliating skin issues, have for years. I have only very recently begun supplementing my diet with cod liver oil and magnesium, for example, to see if I am deficient in omega 3s, leading to some of these issues… I have keratosis pilaris for one, on both my arms and upper legs, some acne, and what seems like perpetually clogged pores on my face and chest and general roughness, red bumps, and constant flaky dryness everywhere. IO think I may have folliculitis on my legs. I currently sometimes use coconut oil and almond oil. I have recently tried a face mask of bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar, and will be using it weekly to see how it helps. I would love to see if tallow balm could possibly be of help for me and my skin woes!
I think tallow balm would be an answer to my 2 year old daughter’s severe eczema! We currently have to wrap her arms and legs in cloth strips to keep her from clawing herself bloody. We use a few different things depending on what “stage” her eczema flare up is at. But honestly…nothing has helped enough to let her go unwrapped. I would love for her to be able to wear short sleeves when the weather warms up. At 2 years old…she shouldn’t have to suffer with this! Thanks for the opportunity!
I have recently been wrestling with an allergy to what I am guessing to be coconut. That makes finding health and beauty products extremely challenging! I have such dry skin during the winter, that I have had to resort to using Vaseline to try to heal my cracking hands, since pretty much everything else contains coconut derivatives. Yuck! I would love to be able to give tallow balm a try. It sounds marvelous; especially the scent called Windswept. I think it would also benefit my three year old, who has developed an allergy to tomatoes and has resulting patches of red, irritated skin that are not healing well. Thank you for your consideration and for offering such a generous gift!
I would like to try this for my son. His son is like sand paper. No matter what I use, nothing has worked. We have tried every over the counter and medication but his skin is still like sandpaper. I was just looking for something and came across this by a friends facebook page. I am at my end on how to treat his skin.
I love homemade tallow balm! I’ve also made lard balm but prefer the tallow balm! I use tallow from pastured cows and organic cold-pressed olive oil. I would love to try this company’s tallow balm. For mine, I generally use organic vanilla essential oil or organic lavender for scent.
I was just talking to my cousin about tallow as skin care this afternoon! I am beginning to notice how much I have aged in the last three years having had two babies and not much sleep. I currently only use coconut oil on my face but my cousin recommended I try tallow. I would LOVE to receive one of these to try. I would also use it on my 2 year old’s eczema, which has improved greatly but not completely. Maybe tallow is the missing piece to heal him!
I started using tallow last year and I bought a jar from vintage traditions a few months ago. I absolutely loved it and it works wonderful on my baby girls sensitive skin. Apparently, it’s so wonderful and natural that my dog loves it too because my older daughter used it and left the lid off and my dog licked the whole entire jar clean! I could’ve cried! So that’s why I would like a jar :-)
What skin care products you are currently using and why would you like to receive a tallow balm?
Currently I am using all natural and essential oils. I have a very extreme case of Eczema and haven’t found the exact solution to keep my skin from its driest state. I am done with medications that promote steroids as I see how damaging it has been to my skin over my life-span. I also have a baby girl now and would do anything in the world to prevent this skin issue from impacting her life such as it has mine. I would certainly use/try Tallow Balm if given the opportunity. From following your articles, this maybe the product that will solve my dry skin.
[…] March 1, 2015 I wrote an article about the benefits of tallow balm for our blog. After having re-read the article, I realized that there is not much more I would add […]
