DR. COWAN’S LATEST BOOK
Quite simply, Dr. Tom Cowan has had a profound impact on my life experience. He introduced me to the book Nourishing Traditions and the Weston A. Price Foundation when I went to see him for my first office visit back in 2004 in San Francisco. His wife Lynda Smith was one of a small group of us that named this educational initiative Nourishing Our Children in June of 2005. She introduced me to Nonviolent Communication that has greatly influenced the way I perceive myself and others, and is very clearly present in her husband’s latest book. I was very happy to receive a copy from Tom! The book is available on his website, as well as on Amazon. His team has very generously offered to give away 5 copies that will be randomly chosen. I’ll cover those details at the bottom of my review!
In short, I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it. Tom explores how we might raise a healthy child in a toxic world, and his focus is not primarily on them being physically healthy, which he has written extenisvley about in the book Nourishing Traditions for Baby & Childcare co-authored with Sally Fallon Morell. He writes to us from his experience as a parent and a grandparent, as well as his observations as a doctor over the course of more than thirty- five years. He shares that his experience as an observer of Waldorf schools and his understanding of his fellow human beings gained over sixty-eight years of life also informed his perspective. Tom states that he hopes to make the case that your child is a unique and gifted human being who deserves to be treated as such. His book is filled with many pearls of wisdom that I have decided to focus my review on from each chapter, many of which I’ve read more than once.
PEARLS OF WISDOM
Following are some of the pearls of wisdom that struck me from each of the chapters. The chapter tiles are listed in bold. I think this will give you a sense of the book and I hope it will pique your curiosity to learn more! All quotes are directly from the book, with some of my comments in brackets:
- Choosing Sides. If you want to raise a healthy child in a toxic culture, get on your child’s side and stay there, no matter what. [From what I understand having read the book, this doesn’t mean that we must always approve of our children’s behavior, but rather that our approach to raising them is based on empathy for the needs they are attempting to fulfill.] The publisher, Steiner Books, has given me permission to include this first chapter for you to read!
- Trust. “Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives.” — Rudolf Steiner. Free human beings, human beings who trust themselves, human beings who are happy, independent, and seek their unique destiny. Human beings who think deeply, who actively seek to understand how they and humanity in general fit into the larger world. Human beings who seek wisdom, justice, and compassion. Human beings who can love and be loved. Human beings who at the time of their death can look back on their lives without regret. Those are some of the qualities of a human being encompassed by the word “healthy.” These qualities, and many others besides, should and must be the goal of our attempts to raise healthy children.
- Rhythm — Every parent and adult who interacts with children should attempt to cultivate the art of telling stories, singing songs, and creating games from their own experience and childhood. Rarely can a small child resist being drawn into these tales. The next best approach is to read stories from books or sing common children’s songs. Both are fine, but children, like all people, find it most rewarding to interact with other fully engaged people. If you are telling your own story from your own life, you will be engaged—less so reading from a book.
- Perseverance — A child who never gets acutely sick, never has a fever, cough, runny nose, never has flu-like symptoms will become a weak, chronically sick person in many cases. When our children go through fevers, chickenpox, measles, etc., they get stronger, their detoxification pathways get exercised, and research has shown that these children end up with less susceptibility to all the chronic diseases from which many of the adults in our society suffer.
- Play — Your primary job, besides keeping the child safe (i.e., not allowing them to cut their nose off with hedge clippers), is to expose them to as many of these types of activities as you can muster. With enough diversity, it is rare to find a child who doesn’t find their niche. Some children focus on one activity, some change activities and interests seemingly by the minute. As far as is practical, either way is fine.
- Integrity — The words, “You should be ashamed of yourself,” words I clearly remember hearing as a child, should be stricken from the vocabulary of all those who even get near a child. Shaming, in words or actions, is the opposite of being on your child’s side.
- Food Fights — Most parents will have to take the uncomfortable step of presenting their child with food for dinner and the child refusing to eat it. At that point, inwardly and outwardly, you have to be totally at peace with this choice. That doesn’t mean you have to give them something else to eat. After all, you planned and executed a perfectly good dinner (hopefully), with lots of delicious fats, many flavors and food groups. You have no need to make something different. This can be quickly and easily explained. At that point, their choice is to eat or not, with no hint of any consequences at all (except maybe their own natural feeling of hunger). This is the hard part, the inward stance that this is all good—I did my part, and my child is doing their part. In my experience, this may result in a hungry child one night, but almost never for more than two days. Once they trust that you got the message, it’s simply time to eat and move on.
- Punishments and Rewards — There is nothing more absurd than physically, verbally, or emotionally punishing children so as to prevent them from growing up to be physically, verbally, or emotionally abusive to others. American culture, if nothing else, is a dramatic example of how this mindset clearly doesn’t work and only results in a violent, warlike, abusive way of life. That is not what I mean by healthy children.
- School — “Do not train children in learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” —Plato
- Radical Monopolies: The Hidden Curriculum — Radical monopolies, such as the school industry, always rob the less advantaged to support the more advantaged members of society. They often do this in conjunction with related radical monopolies to fleece us of our resources.
- Education — Don’t be afraid to let your child be “bored.” Most people in traditional cultures spent a fair amount of time just walking around, sitting around, or doing other “non-productive” activities. Often this is when the most profound ideas are hatched.
- Learning to Read — “It is harmful when children learn to read and write too soon.” — Rudolf Steiner
- Electronic Devices — “In your own home avoid installing any wireless system, and if you must use electronic devices, use them only on wired systems that go through your phone line.”
- Returning to Life — There have been over a thousand rigorously studied cases of young children, usually between the ages of three and six, who have clear and verifiable memories of past lives. We must realize that our children come with strengths, weaknesses, intentions, fears, goals, and a path. It is our job, in our quest to raise healthy children, to honor and, as far as possible, to understand this unique path. [This chapter was fascinating to me and I will definitely follow up to learn more about this body of research!]
- Envisioning a World Fit for Our Children — Instead of showing them Disney movies of ridiculous, phony, talking animals, go to a local park and watch the squirrels climb the trees.
- Vaccines and Animals — Our animal guides also need the best food, appropriate to their species, a safe and loving home, and no vaccines, ever.
Appendices:
- Electromagnetic Frequencies — If you ever touch your cell phone, plug it in your ear, strap it to your wrist, or push the restart button, you have violated the agreement, and the manufacturer is no longer liable for any damages.
- Tylenol — Tylenol use in large amounts, all at once, kills people from liver damage. The routine use of Tylenol for acute, febrile ill- ness prolongs their suffering and makes them have a higher likelihood of a poor outcome from their illness. Tylenol appears to be a potent neurotoxic substance and is associ- ated with damage to higher functions in the brains of young children. Given these clear facts, tell me again why we are using millions and millions of doses per year on our young children and pregnant mothers?
- Diagnostic Ultrasounds — To be clear, I am not against the use of DUS in cases in which the results of the examination can and will lead to a clear therapeutic intervention that delivers benefit to mother or child. But I am completely against the use of an unsafe examination for any routine pregnancy unless and until this test is conclusively proven to be safe, which in my opinion will never happen.
Again, this book is on Dr. Cowan’s website, as well as on Amazon, and I found it to be very worth my while, even as someone who doesn’t have children! I will add my own review to the 42 5-star reviews on Amazon to support the 100% 5-star record to date!

106 Responses to Commonsense Childrearing — Unconventional Wisdom for a Nourished Childhood
I have a great interest in reading this book! My daughter is currently two years old and we are looking to grow our family. I am inspired by the wisdom of the people who come before us. I have found natural continues to be the best way to go about things!
it would be a great honor to win this book! I have twin toddlers that have benefited so greatly from Dr Tom and Sally. My kids were born premature at 33 weeks and living this lifestyle and eating ancestral has made them so healthy and strong. Raw milk has saved us greatly!
I would love to be chosen to receive a copy of this book. I am raising a boy with severe adhd symptoms and always researching ways to improve improve our lives as all the doctors offer is medication. I’m especially interested in the Food Fights concept as I make changes from a standard American diet (SAD) to a more nourishing way of eating. The Radical Monopolies concept is also of particular interest to me. My child went to public school for kindergarten and I quickly realized it wasn’t going to work for him.
I love Dr. Cowan’s other books. I would love to read this one, as well. I have three kids of my own and a nutrition practice that emphasizes whole family nutrition, so kids are a big part of my clientele. Looking forward to reading this!
I have great interest in this book. My youngest is four, so we’re in the middle of all of this. The pearls of wisdom that resonate the most are the #1, #4, and #9. We will be homeschooling and I’ve been thinking a lot about what that will look like and what will help him the most.
My husband introduced me to Weston A Price Foundation one Christmas when he purchased the Nourishing Traditions cookbook. Since then we became hooked on the Wise Traditions podcast and of course Dr. Cowan. I am very interested to read this book to help guide how we raise our children. Just reading this review, I have to thoughtfully look at how we treat electronic devices and dinnertime in our home. Thank you to Sandrine for sharing this preview!
You are most welcome! I wanted the review to offer pearls of wisdom so those who choose not to purchase the book can still walk away with educational content!
I would like to read a copy of Dr. Cowan‘s work. I am very interested in his studies and have followed him for many years. I am a 30 year veteran teacher who has focused my entire adult life on helping children reach their optimal development. I also have a masters degree in education with a thesis study on Waldorf education. Rudolf Steiner groundbreaking ideas of using 4H i.e. hands, heart, head, and health have transformed education in the last hundred years. Following these holistic strategies of raising our children can help eventually lead to world peace. This book is helping us to achieve that. I can’t wait to read it.
I would absolutely love to read this book, and I can already tell it would have a place to stay on my shelf. As a Registered Nurse it is child-rearing that opened my eyes to many of these topics and caused a transformation of lifestyle for myself and my family. I love the focus of this book being on how to treat children as whole, incredible human beings and bring them up with that mindset. Having come from a broken and dysfunctional home, I could use some wisdom on the parenting front as I raise my own strong-willed child while attempting not to break her amazing spirit. #1, 5, 7, and 8 really resonate with my current season although I am intrigued by everything written here.
I would love to receive a copy. We have been working towards incorporating more and more WAP principles into our live style for a few year now. As a family with littles, we’d love this input too. We’re always working towards doing our best with the knowledge that we have.
3 kids in but I still feel like a new Mom. I think this book would be an insightful and informative read. I was intrigued by the quote that stated “you should be ashamed of yourself” should be stricken from a parents vocabulary. This and the other excerpts seem like valuable knowledge to have when raising children.
The book is very much a reflection of the Nonviolent Communication principles, and this sentence is one example of that!
I would love to win this book because I’m raising two young children and am always seeking thoughtful, grounded guidance. As a mother, I prioritize a holistic approach that nurtures not only their physical health but also their emotional and developmental well-being. I’m drawn to parenting perspectives that challenge the status quo and encourage deeper connection and intentional choices. This book feels like a valuable resource to support the kind of mindful, wholehearted parenting I strive for every day.
I think you’ll love this book based on what you wrote!
This book seems like a precious gem I’d love to add to our collection. I’m very intrigued to learn more about healthy rhythms play. I liked especially the part about allowing kids to be bored, I needed to hear that. My husband and would both love a chance to read this!
I just had my first baby last July and right before I got pregnant, I heard about and started following the Weston A. Price Foundation. I read thoroughly what it would take to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. My baby is now hitting major mile stones much quicker than his peers and I think a lot of it has to do with the diet! I would love to learn more from this book and keep growing with my family in our knowledge of what will make us the healthiest and the best way to raise our child!
I would be so grateful to receive a complimentary copy of Common Sense Child Rearing! As a parent deeply interested in holistic, non-toxic living and raising children in alignment with nature and ancenstral practices, Dr. Cowan’s perspectives always resonates with me. His ability to challenge conventional thinking with wisdom rooted in both common sense and tradition is something I deeply appreciate. I’m especially intrigued by the idea of trusting a child’s innate wisdom and development rather than constantly intervening- something that’s hard to find in modern parenting books.
It’s challenging as a new mom (baby is 7mos) navigating through all the rearing advice, much of which doesn’t resonate . I think this book could help me articulate what my heart already feels. Sounds like it could be very helpful to give perspective on discipline that’s appropriate instead of harmful and how to cultivate play that expands our children’s world. I’d love to receive it to support my endeavor to help my daughter flourish.
The Pearls of Wisdom resonate with me. Some are cherished because they reinforce what we did as parents. Others are gentle reminders of what we wished we had known. I especially liked the food preferences and the boredom observations. Dr. Tom, you rock!
I would love and truly appreciate a copy of this book. As a first-time, single mom of a 5 month old, I’ve been doing almost everything different than my mom. Not because she got it wrong, but I’m more on the “crunchy” side of things and, of course, knowledge and our understanding of things have increased from 30+ years ago. I’m always looking to know and understand more! All the listed points have peaked my interest, especially #12! It’s probably ties in with #5 (?). I’m looking forward to reading this book!
I cannot WAIT to own this book. I pride myself on owning and having read all of Dr Cowan’s books. From autoimmunity to how the heart “works” to water to all things with Sally Fallon I just can’t get enough. His interview on wise traditions podcast brought me to literal tears during COVID. He is a man with a true heart and yearning for the truth and deep understanding of life itself. Thank you Dr Cowan. You are a gift.
I would love this book first and foremost because my husband and I are trying to get pregnant and I want to do right by my future child from the start. Additionally, I am a therapist and this would help me with any child that comes to my practice.
One of the topics that I’d love to know more about is where he says children can learn to read and write too young. I’ve never heard that before and I was an early reader – so I’d like to understand why he has that view!
Lastly, I’ve always been a firm believer in the harm of children and electronics, so having more evidence of that would be great!
Thank you for this opportunity!
I would be so grateful to receive a complimentary copy of this book! I’m a new parent to a 5-month-old and have been following Nourishing Traditions for Baby and Child Care closely since my wife and I started preparing to conceive our first child, along with Super Nutrition for Babies and the original Nourishing Traditions cookbook. These resources have been foundational in how I care for my daughter—every meal, every health decision, and every routine is rooted in these principles. I’m also a proud member of the Weston A. Price Foundation and am eager to keep learning and deepening my understanding of traditional nutrition and holistic wellness for my family.
The pearls of wisdom you’ve chosen to highlight often feel like gentle nudges to realign with what truly matters. One in particular that resonated with me was the reminder to “slow down and listen”—a powerful truth that often gets drowned out in today’s hectic pace.
I was very intrigued by the excerpts you posted in this article. I have a 1 year old and we have been trying to provide her with every opportunity to thrive. Luckily, we knew enough before she arrived to avoid many of the dangers that are pushed and promoted in today’s world. I would like to dive in and see what else I can learn from Dr. Cowan’s research.
This book seems fascinating to me. Have a listener of my traditions for years and have the nourishing traditions book. We just welcomed our first baby, it will be eight weeks old this week. We had a home birth, no vaccines, no hospital intervention. It was beautiful and wonderful. We are trying to bring her up as holistically as possible, and I think this book would be a great resource to that. The most interesting thing to me is about schooling, as we plan to homeschool. Not having children read or write early, I’m interested to learn more about this.
this looks like all the information I wished that I had while raising children.
now that I am Grandma age I want them to have the info that I only knew intuitively
Thanks for this review! I listened to Dr. Cowan read the first chapter on his podcast. I think the title, Commonsense Childrearing, says it all. I personally find Dr. Cowan hilarious, because he has such a great way of cutting through the “BS” and stating things in a, well, “commonsense” manner. I have a tendency to want to control things, which is impossible, and listening to Dr. Cowan’s perspective on different topics helps me relax a bit. Me reading this book is going to do my family a great service! I’m also interested to hear more about his thoughts on topics like rhythm. I will be doing a ~Waldorf-inspired un-schooling homeschool~ and rhythm is very important in Waldorf.
I would love to win this book. Tom Cowan’s work is just so right and empowering and seems even more relevant as time goes on. With the way the world is in this day and age ,we cannot have enough people lighting up the path to a paradigm where the natural being can thrive again. Tom is a true way shower ,his information and his books are treasures for any person even remotely interested in expanding their awareness and creating a better world. Love and Joy
I would love an opportunity to read this book, it sounds fascinating! I am a mother to 3, from ages 11 to 5 months. I struggle with the decision to homeschool, technology use, healthy meals and more… this book sounds like it could lend some guidance in these important areas of parenting. I appreciate your summary of the is book, and I really hope I get the chance to read it.
As a mother of young children, I have been voraciously reading everything I can get my hands on that understands children are born persons and respects their dignity. It’s been such a shift from how I was (lovingly but often dysfunctionally) raised, and I find myself struggling at times to reconcile what I learned experiential with what I believe and what neuroscience, past cultures, and my heart intrinsically knows. I would love to digest this book and apply it to my worldview and glean better skills…although parenting is “natural”, I cannot say that it’s come “easy” to me. I believe family (and those in my sphere of older and younger generations) would greatly benefit from the wisdom in this book!!
I would love to read this book! I had taught in the public schools for almost 8 years before leaving. We love and follow Steiners teachings. I have since opened a small nature based in-home daycare where we nourish our bodies and play freely. I am so excited to see many of my favorite topics in one book! I can’t wait to use the new knowledge I learn from this book!
i would enjoy this book for all aspects but I believe what peaked my interest was the part about punishment and reward. The sentiment expressed in the first line is definitely how I feel yet like the commenter above struggling to reconcile a shift because of common use of these tactics. Also the Tylenol would be of interest for sure. Raising children is so hard and I wish I was good at the games and stories part.
I am a grandma to three, love reading anything by WAP and Tom Cowan, and am myself an adult of a dysfunctional family overcoming trauma from a verbally abusive “surrogate sister/parent” . I am so grateful for this new book from Dr Tom and would love a copy to share with my daughter. The three “Pearls of Wisdom” that really resonate with me are: Choosing your child’s side, Building Trust, and Setting a Rhythm with your children in the home with singing songs and telling them stories.
I am a mom of 4 and a homeopath. I was lucky to discover with a price and me before the birth of my first child (who is now 20). I love Dr. Cowan‘s work and would love to read this synthesis of a book. Your summaries about trust, perseverance , the hidden curriculum, and pets are probably the most intriguing chapters to me at this point. Thank you for this opportunity!
*To discover Weston A Price and Homeopathy
I’d love to win a copy of this book. We have a 4 year old son and are right in the middle of all of these topics. Since having thyroid cancer myself and having to stop breastfeeding my son earlier than I wanted in order to complete treatment, I’ve overhauled our life to be holistic and naturally minded. This book by Dr. Cowan would be a welcome addition to our arsenal of information.
I work at a children’s home and would like to change the way we do things here. But I also need backup from a doctor so it’s not just my opinion. That’s why I would love a copy of this book. And not only to change the lives of the children I work with but the lives of my own grandchildren!
I would love to win a free copy of Dr. Cowan’s book. I consulted him for medical reasons years ago and his perspective was so helpful to me. I was a member of the WAPF for a number of years when my children were small. And I followed his videos during the COVID situation a few years ago. I would love to see what ideas he puts forth regarding parenting and how to raise a child these days.
This books sounds like an amazing resource for all parents! I would be thrilled to win one of them. It’s hard to narrow down which pearls of wisdom speak the most to me, but integrity, education, and food fights are for sure at the top of the list. This book would be such a blessing to have!
I
The Weston Price diet led to us getting pregnant and so I’ve been seeking out truth ever since. I first listened to Tom on one of the podcasts and have recently heard him talk about this book. I can’t wait to read it because I want to make sure I’m raising a child that can really think and make sense of the world. It has taken me a long time to break out of the school mindset and there is still so much I dont know about raising a child right.
I have been following dr Cowan for a bit and find his words so inspiring! I am a mother of 7 ranging in age from 8 months to 21 years. I wish I knew about these concepts with my older kids. I feel like I have a second chance to do better with my younger children. I would love to have this book as a resource!

(Sorry I’m commenting a second time. Someone apparently made an account for me and what a name they chose…)
I’d love a copy to be able to refer to for patients in our family practice. We see lots of kids and the majority of them are declining vaccinations and for good reason. We also see many who want them and this might be a great resource to help sway them. I think we need more common sense parenting!
I would like to enter the drawing for the book! Such commonsense in easy to read format! I personally agree with all of the statements shown! I would like to give it to my daughter of 4 grades school children! She agrees with some of these premises, but not all. She would read the book, & I would like her to also! She’s doing a great job, and needs encouragement. (Love those grandkids)💖

I really look forward to reading this book. As a single mom in the suburbs, I have not found myself surrounded by likeminded folks. Instead, I have found my “village” to learn from in books and podcasts. I’m especially interested in the section you titled trust, above. Trust.
My child has hit a new stage of his development and I’m feeling a little out of my depths. I’m ready for some new insight and wisdom and Tom’s book seems like it will be helpful. Thank you!
I love that Dr. Cowan is not afraid to speak up against the narrative. He takes a common sense approach and looks at things critically and objectively. One of the things I have come to trust with Dr. Cowan is he never accepts concepts at face value just because they have been widely accepted to be true or promoted by other “experts”. He is able to use his extensive medical experience to ensure the concepts are actually consistent with real science and how the body functions. He has a great gift in being able to use relatable examples to explain his ideas and is often able to add a touch of humor as well. If his previous books are any indication, this book will be yet another great resource for those who either have or work with kids. I look forward to reading this newest book!
wow, I would love to read this book! Learning about what is healthy for my 4 children is something I am passionate about. I am interested in learning more about his take on discipline and how we grow our children to be healthy emotionally as well as physically. I would love to learn more about education and what he recommends. Lastly, I am excited to learn about rhythms that you gave us just a snippet of. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I have read The book and own a copy. But I would like to distribute this to my children and grandchildren if possible. The extra copies would be most helpful in doing this, as I see this as a way forward for parents to help their children in the most responsible way possible. Thanks for this opportunity.
I would love to receive a copy of this book to give to my son and his wife who are expecting their first child in October. I know Dr. Cowan personally. He was the anthroposophic doctor at my sons Waldorf School and our personal doctor. My children benefited greatly from Dr. Cowan’s wisdom and understanding of the developmental stages children go through. The sample chapter “Choosing Sides” resonated deeply with me and is something I experienced firsthand had with my son. Fortunately, I had the wherewithal to take my child’s side despite what a teacher and the mother of the other child involved said (even though she hadn’t witnessed anything personally). In the end it was revealed that what my son was accused of did not happen and certainly not in the way it was portrayed as happening. I can only imagine the damage I would have done to my son if I had not been on his side. I “knew” my child and I “knew” he was not capable of doing what he was accused of doing. It was hard not to accept what his teacher said (even though that teacher had received the information second hand from the teacher on duty at recess ) because I trusted and respected his teacher. However, it is important to understand that above all you must trust your “gut” and support your child. This book is so important! The societal pressures on child rearing are so great and misinformed. I wish every parent could have a copy!
hi,
currently I am reading the book “the contagion myth”. I have also watched some videos of Dr. Tom Cowan. I think his way of delivering the idea is very subtle using common sense. I want to learn from him & hence here & there try to watch his new content.
I’ve already devoured CommonSense Childrearing myself and even gave a copy to my daughter-in-law (because, let’s be honest, the world needs more common sense). Now I’d love to pass it along to my daughter, who is about to embark on the wild, wonderful adventure of raising tiny humans. We raised our own kids with this same philosophy—giving them the freedom to explore the world of a farm and ranch, with just a few hours of structured learning and lots of dirt under their fingernails. I’m hoping this book can be the wise (and slightly rebellious) auntie voice she hears when things get chaotic. Help a grandma out—I promise to keep spreading the Cowan gospel!
I’d like to read this book. I loved his book The Contagion Myth! I’m pregnant with my 2nd and hope to have many more. The noirishing traditions approach has helped me so much with my first. He eats eggs, bone broth, butter, and soaked whole grains everyday. And sourkraut!
This is a thoughtful, informative review. I am no longer raising small children, but much of what is in the book can still apply to teenagers. I also have young adult children who are getting ready to start families of their own; this book would be a valuable companion to the nourishing children copy I have already gifted them! I am excited to encourage future generations to flourish in spite of growing challenges in the world.
I am very excited to read this book! I am a moderator and this is a test to see if I can comment, as some have started they aren’t able to comment. This is not an entry.
I would be very grateful for a copy of Dr. Cowan’s latest book – Commonsense Childrearing. I already own a copy of his previous book entitled “Vaccines, Autoimmunity, and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness” and it was incredible source of information for me as we navigate a holistic approach to health care and raising children. I’m sure this new book has many similar gems of information that would be beneficial in our day to day life.
As a new parent, I’m always searching for guidance that aligns with my intuition rather than just mainstream trends. Reading this post, I felt an immediate connection to the idea of truly being on my child’s side — not just managing their behavior, but deeply understanding and supporting them. I would be so grateful to receive a complimentary copy of this book, as I believe its wisdom could help me become the kind of parent I truly want to be — grounded, present, and nourishing in every sense of the word. I look forward to learning how to incorporate more nourishing traditions to my parenting technique! Thank you for the consideration!
I would love to receive this book. I have an 8 month old. My eyes have been opened by reading Nourishing Traditions. The advice and wisdom I found there has made me start exploring alternatives to both the mainstream diet and child rearing. I am interested in learning more about all of the bullet points.
I was excited to read about this new book by Dr. Cowan! Though not new to being health-minded and “crunchy” I am relatively new to the WAPF. A friend started me on their path a couple of years ago when she recommended the book Nourishing Traditions and my mind was blown as I read through it in its entirety. I have since gone through periods of bingeing articles on the WAPF website and soaking in all the information, many of which are written by Dr. Tom. My own children have all “grown and flown” but as a grandma to littles I hope to have a positive impact on my grandchildren’s lives. Hopefully I will even be able to pass on some of this great wisdom to my children who are in the stages of parenting now. Thank you for the opportunity to perhaps get the book via this giveaway!
My husband and I follow several of Dr. Cowan’s principles, generally- like prioritizing nutrient-dense foods (per Nourishing Traditions/4fold Path of Healing) and mindful & limited use of electronics – so we’re eager to dive deeper into his holistic approach to childrearing. The pearls of wisdom, especially around trust and rhythm, resonate with me as raising children with intention and empathy, we have intuitively incorporated trust building and rhythm over dominance & strict routine. I’d love to win this book to gain new insights and reinforce our commitment to nurturing their unique spirits. It feels like the perfect guide to support our parenting journey!
I would love to receive a copy of this book to pass on to my young coworker. I helped her choose to do a homebirth and so far at age 10 months her child has had no shots. My coworker has no mother so am trying to guide her in a healthy direction.
I love and hate the ideas presented. So it’s definitely a book I’d read. Talking animals are a cornerstone of the imaginative world. Let’s not disparage them :)
I am looking forward to reading this book, and sharing it with others. As a premed student turned “alternative” medicine and energy healing seeker, who now is raising kids that have been harmed by mainstream medicine, I am learning to navigate between the two worlds. It seems a lot of what we were taught about health and healing doesn’t make sense, and it can be overwhelming raising children in this toxic world. Looking forward to this book!
I would love to read this book as I have a child with Autism and learnt early on that mainstream had very little to offer him in regards to his physical health let alone his emotional and spiritual health. I found Dr Natasha Campbell McBride and her book GAPS and the Weston A Price foundation and I’ve been on a never ending learning curve ever since. We’re also planning on another little one in the not to distant future. I realised that I myself needed to put in effort to heal physically, emotionally and spiritually for my child and myself. This book would be an absolute God send in helping me achieve this.
I am very much looking forward to reading this book. I own and have read and re-read many (if not all) of Dr. Cowan’s books. He is my favorite contemporary non-fiction writer in fact. I have also heard him on many podcasts, including his own, and I love his simple, down-to-earth style and way of guiding his guests or hosts through critical thinking exercises. I have used many of his examples as ways of explaining various health ideas and philosophies to my friends and family.
I now have an 11-month old boy that my wife and I are raising and I know that this book will have tons of wisdom to share. After reading through the various ‘pearls of wisdom’ above, the ones that most resonate with me are: Trust, Play, Integrity and Punishments and rewards. My parents did a very good job raising me and incorporated at least of few of these pearls in their rearing of me. I know that I can take what I learned from them and what I will learn from this book to do an even better job (hopefully!) of raising my son.
I am a slow learner and never thought much about the power of food and light until I got sick. I am so happy to have found Dr. Cowan and other like minded people to help rebuild my body because I truly believe the body will always do the best it can with what you give it. The details matter! My kids are grown, but they all have underlying health issues as well. My hope is to give my daughter this book who will more than likely have kids in the next 3-5 years and it will help her navigate what can be a ridiculously confusing health narrative due to marketing!
tom is undoubtedly a person with wisdom and common sense. Has never put a foot wrong, well apart from breaking his tradition of the type of person he interviews, or does an interview for. He had David Ike on and talked with him.a man who talks shap shifters, nothings real, its all your perception, and oh a hundred other crazy unprovable claims, which goes against my grain, and Tom’s so yes i have never worked that out to this day. I sure would like to hear the reason. Everything i know i can prove, the words Think,Believe, fairh, hope, etc are not in my vocabulary. So ike is full of unprovable nonsense,
Common Sense has been thrown out with the bath water! “Things have changed, it is not done like that anymore!” I hear it often. It is all about the parents today. Have to get the children on the parents schedule. In order to do that, put children on schedules. Naps are limited and cut short, activities chosen so children do not waste their time, medications given as there is no time in the schedule for illness. I have seen children display inappropriate behavior just to get parents attention, temper tantrum after temper tantrum. And then once the child has the parent in his grasp, it is not the parents’ full attention . I see plate after plate of food placed in front of children just to be pushed away because, “my child is a fussy eater.” And of course, there are the food allergies. The list goes on and on…. A very sad situation today.
Growing up, I was Mother Nature’s child and used our imaginations.. In my first career, I was a Montessori teacher, nature my focus. As a parent, we spent our days outdoors and fortunately able to homeschool. As a grandmother, the ground was shaky in the beginning but making headway. My grandchildren are out of their socks & shoes and spending much of the day outdoors in all weather conditions. Just wish I was not asked to wake the children from their sleep to keep to the schedule 😢
All the topics you highlighted in the book review are so important today. The young people are just to young to remember and if we don’t introduce this type of common sense literature to them, it will all be forgotten or until another Tom Cowan comes along and pulls it from the archives or from memory!

How fortunate are we all in this day and age to have Dr. Tom’s excellent common-sense approach to all things, including child rearing?! It’s amazing to be on this journey of re-thinking the ways in which we’ve been taught to approach life & health and have this paradigm – shifting information to achieve health and happiness in an entirely new way! What an amazing time to be alive with an entirely new framework from which to move happily forward!
I love the blog about this book. My favorite concept is that every parent and adult who interacts with children should attempt to cultivate the art of telling stories, singing songs, and creating games from their own experience and childhood. I have no children but interact with many children with whom I play simple games from my childhood (long ago!) and they love it. I would appreciate having the well thought out explanations of practices to use when interacting with young parents. Children are our future. But more importantly, adults are children’s stepping stones to a fruitful life.
I have a great interest in reading this book. I will soon be a grandmother for the first time! I would like to gain insight into raising healthy children in today’s world. I would like to glean knowledge to share with my daughter as she prepares to welcome her first child. Thank you for the opportunity!
I can see from the highlights, I agree with many aspects of this book. However, some concepts are new such as not teaching reading too early… So I’d love to learn more.
I am the Grandmother of 4 amazing Grandcildren and would love to own a copy of Dr Cowan’s new book Common Sense Child Rearing. I believe Granparents play such an important part in a young child’s life and the more wisdom and knowledge they can pass on the better. With the business of the world and young parents being pulled in so many directions this book is a Godsend needed for direction. Two Pearls of Wisdom that caught my eye were. Every Parent who interacts with children should attempt to cultivate the art of telling stories and A child who never gets sick with the flu ,fevers etc will be an unhealthy adult. Thank you for the opportunity to register for the book giveaway!
It is such absolute kismet that brought this review to my email today as I have been exploring home education and raising truly freethinkers. I have been devouring books by Charlotte Mason, and modern home educators such as Ainsley Armet.
I am so proud to say my children have lived a good nourishing life, but the school aspect is one where I believed public school was a good place for education. I wanted to believe in the ideals of it- but when my first grader had homework after being at school all day I knew something was broken. I absolutely believe in removing or reducing electronic devices, and bringing play back to children!
My husband and I have a 14.5 month old daughter and are always looking to learn more about how to raise her (and future children) as healthily as possible. We love listening to Dr. Cowan speak and reading his other books, as well as Rudolph Steiner’s work. All of the nuggets shared by Sandrine are fascinating to us and we would love to dive deeper into Dr. Cowan’s latest book. We have focused on the “nourishing traditions” aspect of child rearing, but would like to learn more about the spiritual/emotional part of it (particularly Dr. Cowan’s “unconventional” take on it). We highly value Dr. Cowan’s approach to problem solving and are eager to gain even more wisdom from him by reading his new book

I would be honored to receive a copy of this book. My husband and I have been following a WAPF diet ever since he was diagnosed with a serious genetic condition. He has completely healed since we fixed our diet, and we will never go back. We are raising our children differently than anyone else we know, and are aways reading and trying to educate ourselves on how children best thrive. We’ve read most of the “Nourishing” books by Sally Fallon, and one or two of Dr. Cowan’s books as well. Reading more of his writing would be very beneficial. Thank you.
So much food for thought in the list you posted. I just had my third baby and I would like to start her off differently than her two older sisters. My family has benefitted greatly from a WAPF lifestyle. I would like to continue this path we’re on and start my baby off the right way. This book will certainly help with that!
I would love to have a copy of this book to pass on the wisdom to the moms that I mentor in WAPF cooking. The part that spoke most to me is about Trust, how to develop “Free human beings, human beings who trust themselves, human beings who are happy, independent, and seek their unique destiny. Human beings who think deeply, who actively seek to understand how they and humanity in general fit into the larger world.” They are only mine for a season. I want to send them out as a contributing member of society.
Regardless of winning the book giveaway, I will definitely be adding this to my home library! I have a 1.5 yo and hoping to be blessed with another baby soon. With so much child raising information out there it’s nice to have this information in a book that is all WAPF friendly. All the topics outlined in the book review are of interest! My husband does not follow WAPF so I’m hoping the book is another nudge for him to continue to make changes.
I would love to read the info on electronic devices. It’s so hard in this era to avoid them, but I know you can mitigate some of the radiation.
I would be interested to read this book, both to support me in mothering my own children, and for my professional role. My children are 10 and 15 and have been raised with an awareness of ancestral health since birth, but it is a constant struggle to update my understanding and align our family’s choices in the face of outside pressures. In my professional role, I am a school psychologist in public schools, so I interact with children with various levels of disability and special needs. It is clear to me that many aspects of the way we raise children in our society is not serving their best interests, and therefore not serving society’s best interests in the long run.
I would love to win this book to continue educating my four nieces on the WAPF way of life. As a chapter leader, I also feel it benefits me to read this and share it with our community. All of Dr. Cowan’s books are chock full of wisdom and “share-worthy”! Tis the season of summertime to sit in the sunshine with a good book and a glass of kombucha.
what I’ve learned so far from this chapter is very interesting and can’t wait to see what other wisdom is in it. We raised our toddler using the nourishing traditions book of baby and childcare and I believe that is why our son has been sick only 3 times in his life, compared to his peers who seem to be suffering a lot from both acute and chronic illnesses. I’d love to see what other things we can do to support and guide him as he gets older around food and make it a pleasant experience for all! Also I coach mothers and having extra insight and tips for how they can ease these kinds of stresses in their day would help them so much.
Dr Cowans wisdom is uplifting. My two children are teenagers but that doesn’t mean it’s time to drop the ball! The book would help me stay the course when they’re facing so many decisions and choices, not just in nutrition but in so many facets of life.
This is the book I wish I had when I started raising my family 15 years ago. I wasn’t ready to receive the information at the time, having only woken up to the sad state of affairs a few years ago. My children are now 15, 13, 11, and 8. Some of the battles you mention are still prevalent in my youngest. I have no doubt it has much to do with the toxic foods we still allow in the house (for the sake of giving them a “normal” childhood). I would love to read your other thoughts on raising kids. Your book on contagion is on my to-read list.
I would love to read this book having read a few other books by Dr. Cowan. He was my doctor for many years and helped me so much! I read your blog post about his way of helping kids eat good food and enjoyed hearing his approach and some of the others picqued my interest as well. I’m also interested in what he will say about vaccines and illness as I seem to need continued support in this area as there is so much to stand up against. Thanks!
I would love to receive this book because we are trying to raise our kids as healthy as possible. Even though we were raised pretty well, we want to improve on what our parents did. We love to research and love to read as much as we can to raise our children well. If we want to change some of the problems we faced as kids (and now as adults), we have to change the way our kids are raised, what they are fed, and how they talk to themselves.
I’m genuinely interested in receiving a complimentary copy of Dr. Cowan’s latest book because his work, particularly his connection to Nourishing Traditions and the Weston A. Price Foundation, has significantly shaped my understanding of health and nutrition. Having been familiar with his previous contributions, I’m eager to delve into his insights on raising healthy children in today’s complex world, especially given his unique perspective as a parent, grandparent, and long-serving physician. The emphasis on holistic well-being, beyond just physical health, truly resonates with my own belief system. Furthermore, the inclusion of his wife Lynda Smith’s influence through Nonviolent Communication also piques my interest, as I believe emotional intelligence and healthy communication are crucial aspects of a child’s development.
The “pearls of wisdom” that resonated most deeply with me, or piqued my interest, are:
My children are a little older, but I don’t think it is too late to learn! This review was very helpful in detailing Dr. Cowan’s main points. I do believe there is still much that I could benefit from. And I would love to pass this book along to another family when I am finished with it!
Thank you for sharing about this book! I would love to receive a copy to read. I have four children, and I want to be the best mom I can be to them. It can feel overwhelming at times with all of the conflicting information out there, but this sounds like it iid full of sound advice and wisdom.
I would love to receive this book because my son is very picky! He does not eat much meat and I know that this is so important yet don’t want him to be hungry. He does still nurse so that’s my saving grace right now. Would like to read more about how to raise him to not be as picky. Expecting another baby so I would like to start with a stronger foundation.
I would love to receive a copy of this book! I have a 2 year old and another on the way. I have been following along Nourishing Traditions for a few years now and am convinced the wisdom of the Weston A. Price Foundation is the reason I have such a healthy toddler and have been able to conceive easily and healthily both times. I believe in raising my children the “old fashioned way” that was much simpler than all the confusing strategies we are bombarded with today. I believe this book would be a great tool in my tool belt to keep learning how to raise healthy, nourished children!
I would love to be a recipient of this book as I am a first time mom to a nearly 11 month old farm baby! I have tried to be so intentional in following the Weston a price principles through pregnancy and now with feeding him in compliance with the GAPS protocol and ancestral nutrition. I want to continue to steward him in ways that will refine him into who the Lord created him to be, and I resonated so much with the pearls you shared – especially those related to consequences, education, and play. This book sounds like a phenomenal new work by Dr. Cowan and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!
As a doctor of chiropractic and grandpa, I am vitally interested in nourishing and raising healthy children. I have enjoyed and learned from Dr Tom Cowan’s other books and would love to receive and share this latest book. I appreciate and use the Weston A Price approach to nutrition. Yeah for Dr Tom and Sally Fallon!
I really appreciate this post! I recently read the review in the Wise Traditions Journal which left me a bit confused as to whether it would be a good addition to my library. (I already own Vaccines, Autoimmunity and the Changing Nature of Childhood Disease.) Now I am very eager to read Common-Sense Childrearing! Whenever I present the NOC slideshow, I always wish I had a good book in this vein to recommend, this seems like just the ticket. Points #12 and #15 particularly resonate with our Childrearing experience.
I discovered the Weston A. Price foundation a few months ago and I can’t tell you how happy I am. My husband and I are planning on starting a family soon and it’s incredibly refreshing to have found a network with traditional guiding principles. I am currently reading Dr. Cowan and Sally Fallon Morrell’s baby and childcare book and am learning so much. I have no doubt that Dr. Cowan’s new book would teach me even more about how to raise kids in today’s world. I am sure it is an incredible book.
I would love to be gifted a copy of Dr. Cowan’s book! I have a seven year old who attended the Wise Traditions conference with me in Florida last fall. She absolutely loved it and is now a BIG fan of beef bone broth for breakfast! We enjoy eating the Nourishing Traditions way and love learning why the foods we eat are so good for us. I really like Dr. Cowan’s perspective on things and I’m sure this book will open my eyes to even more subjects I should be learning about to make our lives healthier and more enjoyable. Thanks for giving us this opportunity!

I love this book called “Common Sense” but it doesn’t exist today for so many in so many different aspects of life. I have grandchildren and there parents need to be reminded of what common sense means in raising children. This book looks so amazing where it covers every aspect of a child’s life and the parent too, so we can make families better and stronger for all. We need better movies, books for our families and this book would be a great one to win. What a kind gesture to offer to 5 lucky people, good luck to all!
Wow… sounds like another very helpful and insightful book by Dr Cowan! I love his wisdom and expertise and especially now that I have two toddler boys, this resonates even more so. I decided not to vaccinate either of my boys and will be homeschooling them as well. Dr. Cowan’s book would be very helpful to not only use his guidance with my children but also spread his good word with other families. We need more families raising children through Dr Cowans/Weston A Price principles. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
I’d love to win a copy of Dr Tom’s most recent book to add to my growing collection of his work. It is quite obvious to me from the sheer number, quality & volume of comments we must scroll past to write our own response, that this book will be an invaluable guidance resource for parents. It’s often been said “there’s no manual for that” but here is clear & helpful guidance which is likely better than any mechanicalized status quo manual.
I think it’s brilliant the way you laid out excerpts of each chapter along with your brief comments to give us a delicious taste of each flavor, Sandrine. As I read each one, I felt a tone of resonance hit inside me like musical notes being played on my heart, urging me to look deeper into this book.
Neither of my adult children has had any kids of their own, yet & both are turning their minds to it. I’d like to be able to encourage this sort of direction for the next generations coming up & have concerns about decisions they’ve already made & how it may impact how future our decisions unfold.
I’d like to be a source for creating ease & wisdom in what happens next. I look forward to learning about the various possibilities for young children that may still help me benefit my adult ones as they make their own child rearing choices, which may likely be different from what I’d like. Maybe this topic could be his next book…? How about –
“Child Rearing- the next Generation“?
Bless you for offering this precious & generous opportunity.
I am interested in receiving and reading a copy of this book. As a mom and teacher, critically examining our assumptions regarding how we are raising our children is very important to me. I resonated with the author’s words in the beginning of chapter one, and how he found it important to listen to his patients. I hope that this book would give me greater courage to teach and raise children in a way that is best for them, even if it goes against the grain.
This sounds like an excellent book! Especially I like what you said about children being bored. I have three children and feel like we go against the grain of society to have them be bored and come up with their own creative play. So many of the families we know put screens in front of their children if they think their kids are bored. It is a sad trend these days. I’m glad awareness is being brought to letting kids be bored.
This is an incredible opportunity, thank you so much! I would love to win this for our niece as she is due in August, this would be perfect for her and her baby and the family.
The giveaway for this book is already over. We have another giveaway now with Sally Fallon Morell’s books. https://nourishingourchildren.org/2025/06/14/giveaway-in-celebration-of-twenty-years/
