There is a Chinese proverb that asserts that it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. We concur! We are close to the darkest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Scented or aromatherapy candles are ubiquitous particularly around the holidays and some of us use Hanukkah candles. We recommend that you avoid petroleum based paraffin candles, which are quite toxic, and use 100% beeswax, organic soy or tallow based candles instead. Please learn why in my previously published Candles post
… and I’ll tell you about our giveaway below! Note the colored words are links!
TALLOW CANDLES
I have recently discovered Stone & Spear’s tallow candles and have one of each scent on the way: Autumn Spice, Peppermint Blossom, Lavender Meadow and Rustic Sunrise. They burn 25 hours or more. They are made of beeswax, grass-fed beef tallow and natural essential oils. The wicks are made out of 100% organic hemp and 100% pure beeswax. Their “Peppermint Blossom scent contains the fresh clean scent of peppermint essential oil. Lavender Meadow contains the beautiful floral scents of lavender and ylang ylang essential oils. Rustic Sunrise is made with the warm and relaxing clove and peppermint essential oils. Autumn Spice is made with the amazing seasonal scents of clove, orange, and vanilla essential oils.” The company has been incredibly supportive of Nourishing Our Children and has offered our community two free candles in a scent of your choice to be mailed within the United States. Enter below!
Meanwhile, if you choose to purchase from them, use coupon code NOURISH at checkout for 10% off your entire order. Stone & Spear sells many tallow based products beyond candles such as skin care, body care, makeup, deodorant, shampoo, and soaps. Currently we only have 100% beeswax candles in our home that we burn. But it was only recently I learned about the harmful effects of the majority of candles that are sold, it was quite alarming! We use grass fed tallow for our face and body moisturizers and I didn’t know tallow could be in candle form as well. Rustic Sunrise sounds so nice and would be wonderful to receive!
I am excited about that scent as well! When I wrote the original post on this topic, I was very disturbed to learn:
In 2005, when the American Lung Association issued a warning to the public about the dangers of paraffin the National Candle Association (NCA) threatened them with legal action. The NCA has also sent letters to others who tried to warn the public.
As was previously noted, paraffin is made from leftover residue of the final petroleum refining process. The wealthy oil industry (which not only sells their by-products to the candle industry but also has four members sitting on the board of the National Candle Association) has assumed a very dominant position in the candle manufacturing business.
I recently purged my candle collection after realizing that most of them are made with synthetic waxes and fragrances. I kept only my pure beeswax or soy wax although I prefer beeswax. I didn’t realize tallow candles were a thing! I don’t tolerate perfumes and most candles give me a headache with the exception of beeswax. I am willing to give tallow a try though! The autumn spic sounds right u my alley.
How do you do with essential oils? I will look forward to trying these candles on the way myself and reporting back once I do!
Autumn Spice would be my favorite scent. I use to drink an iced tea with orange and cinnamon at a restaurant that closed down maybe 15 years ago. Great memory, healthful food in CO.
I have not used candles in my home since learning about the toxins in them around 20 years ago. I do use diffusers with Organixx Essential Oils.
I am excited to learn about your products, I hope I win!
When I read the entries, I always hope for each person to win!
My candles are soy or beeswax, but the latter are hard to find, as well as expensive. Because of cost, I only burn when guests are over. I have known of the dangers of paraffin candles and have not used them for many years. I would love to try the Lavender Meadows candle if I’m chosen! I’ve never burned tallow, only eaten it, lol.
It will be a first for me too when mine arrive! I am excited to try tallow candles.
Subscribed but the only social media I have is X which is where I heard about this. First time I’ve been to this site and I’m excited to learn more and explore. I knew that most candles were toxic but had never even heard of tallow candles so this is awesome! I quit using candles when I heard of the health risks. I do occasionally use beeswax candles and recently saw a beeswax/coconut oil candle that I thought might be good but wanted to do more research before purchasing because it was pricey. I would love to try the Lavender Meadow tallow candle because I tried tallow cream at a farmer’s market and it was amazing! I did like the smell of it so I’m curious how it would smell in a candle. Cheers!
Welcome! We, Nourishing Our Children, is a project of the Weston A. Price Foundation.
I’ve been mostly avoiding candles lately because once you know, you know. But when my son comes home from college to visit, he always finds a candle to light! They smell good but I know they’re not good for you. I’m excited to learn about nontoxic options! Happy Winter Solstice!
Happy Winter Solstice to you! Yes, when you know, you know!
In the past, I haven’t burned candles very often, but more recently I decided it would be nice to have a candlelight dinner with my family for special occasions. I did some research on what type of candles to buy, and it was then that I found out about the harmful effects of paraffin wax candles. I purchased some lovely beeswax taper candles to use in my candle holder and love them! I was very pleased to learn that they don’t drip! I have not tried tallow candles and would love the opportunity to test them out. The different scents offered by Stone & Spear all sound wonderful; I think I would choose the Autumn Spice scent as that seems to be the type of essential oils that I gravitate to. Thank you for this opportunity to learn and try new and healthier products.
Thanks for your entry! I wish I had a candle to send to each one who enters. I enjoy reading the comments.
My mom always burned Yankee candles growing up, but since I got married a decade ago I haven’t kept any candles in the house because I know that mainstream ones are toxic. I hadn’t found a non toxic brand I liked until a few months ago. Of those scents I would like to try the Rustic Sunrise.
I would love to know what non-toxic brand you’ve found that you like!
I switched to only soy and beeswax a few years ago (before I knew tallow candles existed), because I learned about the toxic nature of other candles. I recently started making my own beeswax candles which has been fun. I would very much like to try out tallow candles someday! I use to burn candles regularly, but since switching to mostly beeswax it’s become more expensive so I don’t burn them as much. I would love to try the Autumn Spice scent!
I used to have ALL the candles but I got rid of them many years if not a decade+ ago when I read about the toxicity (on top of the artificial fragrances) and eventually switched over to beeswax. Soy still makes me uncomfortable but I dont know if there is evidence behind that or just related to nutrient toxicity and pesticides. I did NOT know about Tallow candles but I am thrilled to be finding out about them! I think lavender sounds perfect. 😊
I’ve known about the issues with paraffin candles for years, but only recently started moving away from artificial lighting at night. I’ve been using beeswax candles for evening light, and it’s incredibly calming. I haven’t tried tallow candles yet, but now I’m really curious!
I have up most store bought candles years ago and only purchased beeswax beeswax candles from reputable sources. I am so happy to find these and look forward to trying them. I hope I win a free candle but will order some to try now.
I have always loved to burn candles especially during the fall and winter months. After I learned how toxic they were I stopped using any candles for several years. Now I occasionally burn beeswax or soy candles. I have never seen tallow candles but I would love to try them!
We only use beeswax or soy candles for about the last 4 years. Beeswax candles already have a sweet honey smell when you burn them that I love! I havent heard of using tallow in candles. Is it 100% tallow, or more of a combination with beeswax and/or soy?
Ingredients: beeswax, grass-fed beef tallow, natural essential oils, and nothing else!
https://www.stoneandspeartallow.com/products/natural-tallow-candle?ref=home
I was just provided with this information as well: The wicks are made out of 100% organic hemp and 100% pure beeswax.
My husband and I use beeswax candles A TON now that we don’t use artificial light after dark(part of our circadian health journey). We mainly rely on firelight from our wood burning stove in the winter as beeswax candles are so expensive. I would love to get a hive and make my own someday. Never thought to try tallow candles!! So hard to find candles that aren’t made of soy or worse.
Hi,
I use candles every day. They are so magical.
I’d love to try yours. I’m all about going the natural route. I do so in my diet and lifestyle, so why not candles too!
Candles that are non toxic are hard to find.
Most of them don’t stay lit. Most of them stink!
Hope these are better!
I learned about the toxicity of paraffin candles about four years ago and immediately ditched all petroleum-based candles from our home. Since then, I’ve been exclusively using tallow-based candles, which I absolutely love for their clean burn and lack of toxic fumes. However, one major challenge I’ve encountered is finding scented tallow candles—most are unscented, and the few scented options available are limited and often hard to source. I’m incredibly excited to discover Stone & Spear’s line and would love to try the Autumn Spice scent, as the combination of clove, orange, and vanilla essential oils sounds absolutely perfect for creating a warm, inviting atmosphere during the winter months!
Yay! I am so happy to introduce you to these candles!
I am a huge fan of tallow, and although I have never used a tallow candle, I love the idea of burning something clean in my house. We only use beeswax candles when we use them. Scent-wise, I like anything! :)
I have always loved beeswax candles, but am excited to try tallow candles. I have recently been loving tallow for our family’s skin care needs.
I was not aware of how toxic regular candles were. I have two cats and 3 kids in my home so I need something safe for everyone to breath! I love candle light and I am looking forward to trying a tallow candle. I think a tallow candle would be an amazing addition to my life!
I’ve been veering more into beeswax and soy after learning more about artificial fragrance. I used to get headaches from strong scents and finally learned why. I would be excited to try tallow candles, especially the autumn spice scent. There is something so pleasant about a candle on a winter day.
I absolutely love beeswax candles. Lighting a single candle is such a beautiful way to start the day this time of year, and I especially love eating dinner by candlelight. I ditched scented candles a few years ago, and primarily burn beeswax or beeswax/tallow candles. I’ve made candles myself a few times, I’ve had most success with dinner/taper candles. Pouring candles is tricky and they crack easily, so I would love to try these beautiful candles out. I am most curious about Autumn Spice and Rustic Sunrise!
Growing up my family rarely used candles, but in college I was around them more. I noticed every time a toxic candle was lit, I would have a headache after about 10 minutes. After learning more about the “dark side” of toxic candles, I made sure I was only exposed to beeswax candles. Once I made this switch, I didn’t have headaches anymore! I’d love to have the same experience with tallow candles as well. I use other tallow products and have been very impressed, so I’m hopeful to add tallow candles to the list. I love the smell of outdoors so am very excited for the pine/evergreen smell of the Christmas collection candles! Vanilla would be another great smell!
Symptoms such as headaches can be a way the body communicates to us that something in our environment isn’t safe!
I had no idea tallow candles were even a thing! In fact, I didn’t even know about tallow products until a couple years ago and didn’t start using tallow skincare products until last year, as a way to combat my daughter’s eczema on her hands. When Scentsy was all the rave, I of course, joined in with getting a melting pot and collecting a large stash of wax melts. I finally got rid of them in 2016 or 2017, after realizing the fragrances were toxic. Since then, I haven’t been much of a candle person. I had maybe heard paraffin was toxic but didn’t think much of it. A few years ago, we made an advent wreath using cheap candles from the dollar store. We had candles burning on our kitchen table as we were eating dinner. I kind of got a weird feeling that we shouldn’t have those candles burning and haven’t used them since. However, my daughter has now sold soy candles two years in a row as a soccer fundraiser, and so now I have multiple candles from the fundraiser. I’m not a huge candle person, especially since I am leery of the fragrances used. But I kind of like the cozy feel in the fall and winter of a candle burning. I’d love to try one of these tallow candles because I know they are completely nontoxic, and while all the fragrances are probably great, I am definitely drawn to the peppermint one, as it reminds me of Christmas.
Thank you for your entry! I enjoyed reading about your experience of candles!
I love having a home that smells delicious! I do us essential oils and put some in a diffuser for the misting. My chiropractor used to sell candles and soaps made of these healthy things, but I never bought any. I usually got my candles at regular retail stores. I did not know that they were bad for us. I am still learning how to be healthy. I like vanilla type, hazelnut, and similar smells.
Yes, a lot of us, including myself, didn’t know that most candles sold are as toxic as they are. What tipped me off was that I was at a spa in San Fransisco where I lived at the time, back in 2000, and there were signs that stated the candles contained chemicals known to cause cancer. It was a State of California notice. What? How could I relax next to them! I ditched paraffin candles that year!
I always used to burn scented Colonial or Yankee candles mainly on holidays as I used them as decor & to get me in a festive mood. When I learned how toxic they are so started burning unscented beeswax or soy candles mainly & occasionally those scented with essential oils. I would love to receive a tallow candle as I had never heard of them until reading this post & feel they are very ecofriendly and a wonderful way to reduce/reuse/recycle! I love pine, citrus, amber, sandalwood & rose scents. Thank you for doing this giveaway!
Thank you for your entry!
I haven’t burned candles in so long… I knew they there were various toxic elements to conventional ones (fragrance being the most noticeable) and it was just too complicated to sort out. So for the last few years I just find it easier to diffuse essential oils.
The four scents offered all sound appealing!
We’ve used beeswax candles for a few years. It’s been a task to find candles without extra bad stuff from lead wicks, synthetic fragrances, 100% beeswax. The candles I usually find are a mixture of different types of soy, paraffin.. We would love to try any of the tallow candles from Stone & Spear. Thank you!
I love candles but it’s been awhile since I used them because they give me headaches even walking down a candle isle at the store. So I would guess that a candle made with tallow from a clean company would not give me the headaches. I’ve recently got a few orders from stone and spear and have been really enjoying them. I’m sure the candles would be just as good.
any of their scents sound good 👍 👍😀
Yay! I am a new customer of theirs myself. I would love to know what you ordered and what you like!
I stopped burning candles a few years ago because of the risks but have a stockpile that I don’t know what to do with! Especially this time of year. The peppermint candles both sound amazing! I have switched to tallow face products and sunscreen but have yet to try tallow candles.
Hi! I have always loved the glow of candles but have always been extremely sensitive to what I called “fake smell.” Even as a child I was aware that it could NOT be good for you! I’ve only found one other candle that I have liked using essential oils. I would love to try these tallow candles, especially during the winter months to bring some love and warmth to my home!

I used to burn so many toxic candles. Then I learned about the issues w/ them and switched to beeswax candles. My son started his own little business making beeswax candles when he was 8 and he did that for a few years. He’s a teenager now and doesn’t want to make candles anymore and I miss having the smell of fresh beeswax in the house! I’ve never tried a tallow candle.
Wow, so fun to learn of your son’s beeswax candle business, Amanda! Good to see your comment here.
Ever since discovering that most candles are paraffin wax based, I haven’t bought many candles. The only candles I’ve bought have been 100% beeswax candles, with no extra scents (EOs). Ive been wary, trying to understand and research, if it’s okay to burn EO candles, or if those also release VOCs. Excited to see a company that is passionate about clean candles!
I grew up with paraffin candles and I always hated the smell of them. As an adult, I’ve been drawn to beeswax candles because they’re made of natural materials. I didn’t know how toxic the paraffin ones were until recently actually! In the winter, we use candles regularly. My favorite is having them lit during breakfast, when it’s still dark outside. I also like to have some in supply in case of emergency. I’d love to try the tallow candles to compare them to beeswax ones! Looking at their scents, I’d love to try the rustic sunrise one, since it seems appropriate for winter candle burning!
I love the idea of a candle at breakfast when it is still dark outside! It sounds very cozy!
I love candle light but find most scented ones give me terrible headaches. I have tried making tallow cream and will have to research tallow candles. So glad to learn of these healthier alternatives. Would love to give one a try.
I never knew about the toxicity of paraffin candles. I just knew I couldn’t handle the smell so I had to give it up 5 years ago because conventional candles gave me overwhelming headaches. I would love to try out the Lavender Meadow candle if I’d win the giveaway.
Hello. I never knew the dangers of scented big store candles. I am shocked. I am going to change out all my candles. I can’t wait to try Stone & Spear. I am so grateful I ran across this post. Thank you for sharing.
I am also so grateful you came across it so you can avoid the toxic candles!
I have always loved the ambiance with candles and have mostly avoided them in recent years because of the toxicity and the high cost of natural alternatives. It’s great to know that there are other options out there. It’s frustrating that natural options are often so much more money than the toxic versions. I hope that companies like this will thrive and multiply!
I haven’t burned candles for many years. I learned how bad they can be for the inside air and thought it’s not worth the risk for my kids. Now I am missing the ambiance candles give. I would love to burn them again.
we have a small retail shop in Wooster, Ohio. We introduce and provide our customers with clean products. We currently carry a line of soy and beeswax candles and would love to consider tallow. We love all scents and many like non scented as well.
I would love to try these tallow candles – especially the Autumn Spice scent. I’ve known for a while that paraffin candles are to be avoided but I’m confused now when so many mass market candles say soy wax. Is that better? I love the sight and smell of beeswax candles especially – that yellow golden glow is just so precious! I read a historical fiction novel a few months ago and the mother and daughter spent all day in their home making tallow candles. It was the first I’d heard of it, but makes perfect sense as a homesteader! Just another skill we’ve lost over time… I would love to bring that skill back but in the meantime, these will do!
Hi Natanya! Please read the candles post linked to at the top of this post. We only recommend organic soy candles in order to avoid pesticides, herbicides at the like and link to some options!
I used to buy bath n body works candles. It was such a popular store back in the day. Now I only can afford to buy little beeswax candles off Amazon. I would love to get into tallow candles and experience having them in the house. The synthetic fragrance in the average candle on the market gives me such a headache now that I’ve gotten rid of toxic chemicals in the house. Candles are a luxury now!
I’ve never been able to find a candle that didn’t cause me to have an immediate headache. Even so-called natural candles. So, I’ve pretty much given up on them. I’m curious to know if these candles from this company would be different!
I have been looking into clean candles. We haven’t pulled the trigger on any yet. This one sounds amazing! Would love to try a clean candle for the coziness and great smell. ❤️
