Pregnant, at last.

Guest Author – Dawn Moore. I used to feel “really badly” for women who couldn’t conceive. Then I became one of them. I joined a group I didn’t want to be in, like some middle aged horror movie: Can’t see well anymore, can’t wear those clothes anymore, can’t laugh without peeing on yourself, and can’t have babies anymore … There are words you can say that describe the loss, the sorrow, the hurt, the blame, and the grief – but none of them really get close to how it feels for a woman to be not be able to make a baby if she wants one. I had my first…

I don’t have children, so what do I care?

Pictured above is the menu board in the kitchen I’ve lived in in San Francisco for the last 8 years. See the rest in this  kitchen tour. Why would I lead a cause that I don’t fit the demographic of?! I will celebrate my 48th birthday in July and only 13% of our Facebook followers are in the 45 – 54 age range. I conceived of and founded Nourishing Our Children in 2005, at the age of 39. I wasn’t sure whether or not I would still have an opportunity to have children then. I wasn’t married yet. I didn’t want to adopt, or utilize a sperm bank to raise a…

What one mother wishes she had known about nourishing babies.

Pictured is Lisa Cauther’s son Michael. She attempted to feed him pureed raw spinach as a first solid food. Not a food she will feed her next baby. Before we continue along these lines, let me offer an introduction! I experience Lisa as a passionate supporter of Nourishing Our Children. Besides me, she has commented on this blog more than any other community member and is often engaged on our Facebook page and Facebook group! We’ve been online acquaintances for sometime and I had the pleasure of meeting her and her family for dinner in her home in Portland last month.  We attended a GMO protest march together as well,…

We Celebrate 8 Years!

On June 11, 2005 I invited several community members involved in the San Francisco Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation, that I founded and lead at that time, for lunch in order to name our cause. It took us the entire afternoon to come up with the name and byline: – Nourishing Our Children: Timeless Principles for Supporting Learning, Behavior and Health Through Optimal Nutrition! The next day I purchased the domain nourishingourchildren.org, and when it became available in time, also purchased nourishingourchildren.com. The word “our” in our name was very intentional. We choose not to use the word “your” because we considered our collective role as we nourish…

The Dionne Quintuplets: How the Miracle Babies Survived

Guest Author: Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD  When the Dionne quintuplets were born on May 28, 1934, they set off a media frenzy that continued through the 1930s and 1940s. Today, nearly 80 years later, fertility treatments have made multiple births common and modern medicine helps many tiny, premature babies survive. Back then, the Dionne quints made history as the first quintuplets to have lived past infancy. At the time of their birth, no one expected them to survive. The identical girls were born at home with the help of a rural doctor and two midwives in Callander, Ontario, Canada.  Their mom had had six prior full-term pregnancies and had thought…

The Nourished Metabolism

This ebook written by Elizabeth Walling has come to my awareness at an apropos time. It is on sale now for 35% off until May 31, 2013. Take a look: The Nourished Metabolism I have been feeling internally chilled of late. I have also had uncomfortably cold feet on some nights that worried me, so the nutritionist I’ve been working with, Anne Fischer Silver, had me take my basal body temperature for a week several times a day. My temperature was consistently low – not at the normal range of 97.8 – 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit once at any time of day, which Elizabeth Walling identifies as a a tell tale sign…

Creating a Conscious Birth With Prenatal Yoga

What is unique about Prenatal Yoga? Guest Author Rachel Yellin. When people ask me why they should take a prenatal class instead of a “regular” yoga class during pregnancy, my answer is layered and complex. Let’s start with the basics: The physical benefits. Prenatal classes include poses that stretch areas of the body that are often begging for some extra attention during the intense physical transformation of pregnancy—think the hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. And a well-trained prenatal yoga teacher will offer modifications with props for each pose so that your joints (and your psyche!) feel fully supported throughout the class. Most prenatal classes will also provide some time…
